Everyone knows that finals week is a stressful time but it's important to keep things in perspective and stay mentally healthy during it. Whether you're about to enter the hell that is finals week or that dreaded time is still a few weeks away, here's some advice to get through it.
1. Keep your perspective. Of course, it's important to study and do your best on every assignment so you can get good grades. But keep in mind that it's just school. If you do poorly on an exam or even fail, no one's going to die, no one's going to get hurt. You're not going to get kicked out of school, everything will be ok. If you get to the point where you're having a breakdown over an exam, reassess just how important that exam is compared to how much you've blown up its importance. And remember, mental health always comes first.
2. Make sure to eat healthily and regularly. Sometimes people get so stressed about exams and so focused when studying that they end up skipping meals. This is a terrible idea! Eating healthy snacks like fruit and granola bars keeps your body healthy and will help you do better on the exam. Not to mention that you'll actually be able to focus better on your studies with a full stomach.
3. Make sure you get plenty of sleep during finals week in general and especially before exams. Getting a good night's sleep is actually more helpful for exams then pulling an all-nighter. When you sleep, your body gets to recharge and works on retaining information. If you have to choose between pulling an all-nighter or getting at least a few hours of shut-eye, choose the latter. Your body will thank you.
4. Take plenty of breaks. If you've been studying for hours in the library and you can't focus anymore and your eyes are struggling to stay open-take a break! If you can get away from electronics during your break, even better. Take a walk, chat with a friend, just do something to get away from studying for a few minutes. When you get back, it'll be much easier for you to concentrate.
5. If you have time, try to do one nice thing for yourself every day whether it's taking a bubble bath or watching an episode of your favorite Netflix show. I know sometimes you can feel guilty for relaxing during finals week but everyone needs a little time off from the grind.
I hope these tips are helpful and that you are able to stay healthy-both mentally and physically during one of the most trying weeks of school. Good luck on your final exams!
