Since my first semester of my freshman year is coming to a close, I thought I would share what I have learned in these few short months.
1. Don't expect everyday to be a good day.
Look, somedays just might not be your best days. There is nothing wrong with that. The day I moved into my dorm was the day I decided everyday was going to be good in some way. Man, was I wrong. Somedays are the worst. I've learned to just get a chocolate bar and spend the days with my friends studying or watching Netflix.
2. Your roommate might not be your best friend and that is okay.
I got lucky. My roommate is absolutely my best friend and I wouldn't have made it through the semester without her. But, that doesn't mean thats how it always goes. I have heard plenty of roommate horror stories to know that my situation, isn't the majority. Here's a tip: don't got to college expecting your roommate to be your best friend. You might get let down.
3. College is as good as they say, but don't forget you're here for a reason.
I had my weeks where I was with friends overnight, letting my homework wait until the last second. While friends are good, you're in school for a reason. Never let it come second.
4. Living in dorms suck sometimes, but they also have a billion benefits.
Yes, it's small. Yes, it's cramped. Yes, in most residence halls, you don't have your own bathroom. But, you're also right on campus, walking distance from everything! While commuters are stuck looking for parking spots, you're already halfway to class. Plus, people in your dorm are your friends, especially the first week of school.
5. Take care of yourself. It is too easy to get bad habits.
You're on your own now. You decide when and what you eat, when you do your homework, when you go to bed, and if you go to class. It is dangerously easy to fall into bad habits. Get some sleep, do not forget to eat, and go to class, you're paying for it, after all.
College is an amazing experience. Make the best of it.
