5 Thoughts Every Charleston Biker Has

No, I don't mean motorcyclists. Not those bikers. I mean people that ride the ones with pedals and little cute bells that you can buy at Walmart. Here in Charleston, every single day is a struggle for the many that ride their bikes to get from one point on the peninsula to the other. These are the thoughts of a Charleston biker:

1. "These roads are crap."

It's actually concerning how many potholes, dips, and humps there are. It's bad enough driving a car and hitting one of them, but if you're riding a bike, well, just pray you and/or your belongings don't fly off and land 10 feet away. My to-go cup has flown out of my basket plenty of times, and let me tell you, it's a day ruiner.

2. "I love when people drive two inches away from me!"

Hi, yes, I'm a tiny human riding a small vehicle. For the love of Pete, PLEASE respect the fact that I deserve a lane too. There are barely any bike lanes downtown. If you want to pass me, that's cool, just don't do it so close that you could clip my front tire!

3. "Bike racks are far worse than parking garages..."

Wouldn't it be nice if the world just, ya know, had morals and didn't steal bikes? Because locking them up is a pain in the butt. Personally, I have one of those heavy duty U-locks that takes a few minutes to shove on. (And it seems like a lifetime if you have to maneuver around a bunch of other tightly packed bikes. Why does it seem everyone always wants to lock their bikes on the same racks?)

4. "What did someone put in my basket today?"

It's bound to happen when you lock your bike up on a rack downtown. I've gotten everything from lighters to menus to promotions for underground events. No, my bike basket is not a trash can and no, I don't want to go to your basement concert.

5. "Why do people driving in their cars think it's OK to scream at me?"

Catcalls, harassing, you name it. I don't get it. Is there a sign on my back that says, "Hi! I'm riding a bike! PLEASE scream random things at me!" that I am unaware of? I'm trying to get from point A to point B like you, buddy, my vehicle is just a bit slower and a lot cuter.

Our form of transportation makes positive ecological impacts and we get exercise while doing it, but for one reason or another, life for a biker is difficult. And for what? When you have a good answer, let me know.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
