5 Things You Miss About Halloween As A Kid

With Halloween right around the corner, as a college student you can’t help but miss Halloween when you were younger, an elementary schooler-- even a high schooler. Halloween is still fun but just different. The typical Halloween activities you used to do with your family and friends at home are no longer happening at college, and it just makes you miss home a little. It’s the cost that comes with growing up but then again, college is so worth growing up.

1. Trick or Treating

You will always miss going house to house in your neighborhood collecting treats from each family. You secretly still hold grudges on those houses who didn't give the full size candy bars, and you still to this day praise the people who just left the bowl of candy on their steps (the one that said "please take one" but you and your friends grabbed as much as you could).

2. Parades

Elementary school was where you thrived during Halloween. Between the Halloween parade at school where you marched through the hallways and around the building (high key your prime moment of fame), to having class parties where all the parents brought in a different spooky dessert.

3. Decorations

Decorating your house during the fall and Halloween time specifically is definitely worth missing. In college, yes you can decorate your dorm room, but no one really sees it from the outside. At home, you could make your house the "spookiest" on the block and some trick- -or-treaters wouldn't even dare to ring the doorbell. Oh, and you definitely miss the bowl of candy your mom left in the living room.

4. Trading Candy

Oh yeah this is a big one. When you trick or treated, you carried around the biggest bag possible so you could add as much candy to your collection as possible. As soon as you got home, you sorted your candy into different piles and the next day you would bring the ones you don't like to school so you could trade with your friends. You never wanted to trade with the kid who had a granola bar or an apple... you were in it for the good stuff.

5. Costumes

Party City. Wow. During Halloween time this was like heaven and a war zone at the same time. You would drag your mom with you to get the costume you had in mind before anyone else. You would fight to get an employee to get the costume for you, yet sometimes would be disappointed when they come back to tell you they sold out in your size. Anyhow, Party City was always a win for you because you saw all the freaky decorations they were selling, AND you convinced your mom to buy you candy.

Even though times have changed, Halloween is still one of the best holidays. Between dressing up and eating candy, how could you not enjoy it. In a way, college Halloween is even better because now its "Halloweek" and you can have multiple costumes so you never have to decide on just one. Plus, now you can make your own costumes and not have to resort to ugly costume sets.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
