As I sit here in sunny Texas, my best friend is half way across the globe, exploring Europe and have a grand old time abroad. Now as I said, this is my BEST friend, meaning her absence from this continent has been a bit of adjustment. So, I've compiled a list of all the things I've learned as the friend back home:
1) Since texting is not an option, you get creative with your communication
Yes the Facebook messenger app has a prominent spot on my home screen. With funky phone plans, this is the best way to communicate with my best friend, who I've texted everyday since we left for college two and half years ago. Since she can only talk while on wifi, our communication has also been much less frequent this semester. But on the positive side, we always have plenty of stories to swap when we do talk (although hers are usually just a bit more exciting than mine)
2) You will live vicariously through them
About a week ago, I opened my phone up in class to see a stunning picture of the Eiffel tower sent by my best friend. I have to admit, I was a tad bit jealous but also so excited to hear all about her adventures. I also always have plenty of beautiful Instas and Snapchats to look forward to.
3) Time differences are an issue
We had just gotten used to being two hours different and now that time has substantially grown. This again makes communication a bit challenging. But it's kind of fun to guess what time it is there and talk to someone who's basically in a different day than you.
4) Going home for mid-semester breaks is bittersweet
While I'm always pumped to go home, it's rather sad knowing that I'll be in my favorite place without my favorite person. How many days until Christmas again??
5) You will miss them like CRAZY
Absence really does make the heart grow fonder. This is shaping up to be the most anticipated reunion of all time.
