1. You need to have thick skin.
More times than not, some customers seriously lack respect for workers in the restaurant industry. They’ll talk down to you for no reason at all and can be pretty offensive. Some people will find problems with everything, from the lighting at their tables to the way their food is presented. They'll criticize absolutely everything, you've just got to learn to grin and bear it.
2. How to do without.
Working in the restaurant industry gets crazy, especially during different holiday's or events. When you are working any time of restaurant position, you have to work efficiently and quickly in order to keep things running smoothly. This often results in hours upon hours of standing and running around the place without having the chance to eat or go to the bathroom. You learn how to work like this quickly, and can easily do without your basic needs.
3. It's almost always obvious which customers have worked in the restaurant industry versus those who have not.
Because the people who have had restaurant experience understand a seating chart, they will most likely never request certain tables. They don't question waiting for a table. They won't unnecessarily talk down to their servers or have unrealistic expectations for their dining experience. People who have worked in the industry don't sit and hold a table for multiple hours even though there is a wait occurring. They know better.
4. You will become very close to your coworkers.
No one else understands the long hours and cranky customers you have to deal with every day. Your co-workers will become like your mini family, knowing way too many personal details about your life. And more likely than not, a lot of your coworkers will date each other. It's just how it is.
5. Respect is so important.
Whether it's with the customers, your coworkers or your bosses, respect is essential in real life and in the restaurant industry. You won't get anywhere without it.
