The first couple week of college are a huge adjustment. Coming from a small high school, living in a town where I had known most of the people since I was a baby, to Syracuse was so different. I absolutely love the school but that did not come without putting myself out there, something I have never been very good at doing and being out of my comfort zone.
Below are five things that I have learned over the first couple weeks, that I think could help someone or just make someone laugh a bit!!

1. No matter where you go to school, the first couple weeks are hot...very hot. So, invest in a fan!!

So with that, invest in a fan, if not multiple fans. You should have a fan by your bed, by your desk, and a rotating fan in the middle of the floor. Due to the fact that I attend a school that is known for being one of the coldest places, I didn't expect it to be as hot as it was for the first three weeks of school. Unless you want to wake up feeling like you went swimming, buy a fan.

2.  Don't try to sleep with your best friend in the twin bed. Walk them home or buy and air mattress.

Due to the fact my best friend from home also attends the same school, we are pretty much inseparable. Although because she lives halfway across campus, we sometimes just go back to my dorm. Although this seemed like a good idea at the time, I woke up with no blankets, very hot, and a broken neck.

Although my best friend is nicely tucked in with blankets sleeping on my pillow. So one piece of advice is to make her sleep on the rug, buy an air mattress, or walk her home. Until then, you will continue to have neck pain and your best friend will sleep great.

3. Don't try the dining hall cookies

Okay, so everything else in the dining hall isn't great, but the cookies are so good. It's so weird as you'd never think they would be good, but they are. So if you never try them, there will be no problems. If you do, you may find yourself getting one after lunch, and dinner, and possibly putting them in a to-go box for the dorm after. Instead, grab the banana and treat yourself with the cookie every once in a while.

4. Dress up to class.

Don't lose an important part of who you are just for the comfort of leggings. If you love skirts, dresses, and sweaters, continue to wear them. It's amazing how much of a difference a good outfit can do for you. Yes, when you have an 8 a.m. you have no desire but to chuck your alarm clock down the stairs but a good outfit can make the world of a difference.

I always believed in the mentality, you look good you feel good. When you show up for your first exam, you are going to kill it. So ladies keep wearing the cute skirts even when it's so cold.

5. Treat yourself to a good iced coffee.

If you want a venti, get the damn venti. One of my favorite things in life is a good iced coffee. In high school, I got one every morning, as it was part of my routine. Going to college I tried to stop the habit as it is such a money suck but it's okay once in a while you have a good iced coffee. It is not going to kill you and you deserve it.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
