Some job opportunities are harder than others, that's just the way it is. Yes, they all have there challenges but no one can say that at some point they thought one job would be harder than another. For instance, being a math teacher would be harder for me to be than an artist, not matter the struggles. It's just how things are, how a certain persons brain is wired.
However, one job I've noticed that is overlooked and even seen as simple is that of anyone working in the restaurant business, mainly waitresses. Many people don't see how hard that job can really be and they won't see unless they experience for themselves. Now, I am not naive to think that you'll quit your job to go work as a waitress to just experience it. So, here are 5 things to keep in mind when you're going back to you're favorite restaurant.
1) Tip Well... And With Cash
For those who go to a restaurant it is normal to tip your waitress. In fact, it's become such a sociatel norm that if you don't you seem rude and snobby, is some people's opinion. For those who tip with card, it's a nice gesture. But please realize that the money you tip on your card does not go straight into the waitresses pocket. In fact, those tips are taxed by the government. So that $2 that you put on the tip line is worth next to nothing on a pay check.
2) Clean Up After Yourself
It never fails to get a table that just absolutely destroys everything they touch they're food is on the floor, napkins are torn and discarded on the table or floor, there's pencil carved into the table, and let's not talk about the bathroom after a rough night. It's not a hard concept to grasp to just clean up after yourself. Don't destroy other people's property because when push comes to shove, if it was your table you'd be pretty upset.
3) Understand That We Don't Make The Rules
Something that amazes me is when customers get upset over prices or policies posted throughout the restaurant and take it out on either the waitress or host. I understand it's inconvienent to walk a few feet to the designated area to smoke rather than sit at your table. However, not only is it a rule from the owner of the company so that his/her guests can breath while they eat. But it is also a rule for the Health and Food Adminstration. As for prices of certain things, I understand that something may be over priced but there is simply nothing a waitress can do about that. If anything, your drink doesn't even give them a good tip, it goes to the bar.
4) Use Common Sense
I believe that people are born with some sort of common sense. Common sense that can help them walk through life easily and make other people's jobs easier as well. Walking into a restaurant ten minutes before they close is not using common sense. Not checking what time the establishment closes then begging for food or drink is not common sense. Sitting yourself and not checking in with the host, is not using common sense. Flushing a whole roll of toilet paper down the toilet is not using common sense. So words from the wise, find some common sense before entering or planning a trip to a restaurant.
5) Just Be Nice... It's That Simple
Mean customers usually don't get good service. It's just the way it goes. Yes, waitresses and bartenders are supposed to be friendly to everyone. But when they've been working all day, their feet and back hurt, not to mention they get paid less than minimum wage, they simply do not have the time to deal with mean people. Understand that they are human and make mistakes, it's not the end of the world. Your day is not ruined if they forget to get you a water or forget a side for your food. And in the end... usually your waitress or management will make it up to you for the mistake anyway.
It's hard to be a working man or woman. Anyone can tell you that being an adult isn't all rainbows and unicorns. So, remember that we're all the same. Waitresses, lawyers, doctors, construction workers, etc; We're all just trying to make it through life, respect each other and understand that we can do it together.
