When I was younger, Halloween was my favorite holiday because I could be anything I wanted to be and no one could say anything. I could be a pirate, monster, witch or assassin. At some point growing up, it became apparent to me that I was "too old" to dress up. I began asking myself, "What can I do to enjoy myself around this time of year even though I can't dress up or go trick-or-treating? If you love Halloween, there's a good chance you have asked yourself the same question. Not to worry, I have created a list of things to do on Halloween that will be fun no matter how old you are.
1. Visit a haunted house
This might sound obvious, but visiting a haunted house will always be fun. While looking for the perfect haunted house can get tedious, once you find a good one, you can spend hours having fun while being scared. There are usually multiple activities at these scary sites such as cornfields, hayrides, bonfires, parades and tours. I suggest finding a venue that offers multiple options so you have plenty to do.2. Stay overnight at an abandoned building
There are going to be some caveats with this one. If you didn't pay for this experience (meaning someone owns this building and is running a business), you may be trespassing on private property. After doing some research, if you know of an abandoned building that belongs to someone, you an get permission to stay there. I managed to find a few places like this in Wisconsin, so there are bound to be a few in every state. The easiest alternative would be to join in on a tour that includes an overnight stay. Though this takes away from the excitement, you could rest assured that you weren't breaking the law.
3. Get a gig as a monster actor
If just going to a haunted house isn't enough for you, try working at one. You'll get to dress up as a monster and scare everyone you see. You'll also get to be behind-the-scenes of these spooky nightmarish Halloween sets. Plus, you'll be getting paid for it!
4. Have a horror movie marathon with friends
If going out on Halloween isn't your thing, call up some friends, buy as many bags of candy as you want and turn on those horror movies. They can't be nearly as terrifying in the company of friends, can they? The best thing about Halloween is that it is a 24-hour free pass to make your blood sugar go out of control, so don't hold back on that candy dish.
5. Go ghost hunting
Ghost hunting is something I've always wanted to do, but definitely not alone. Ghost hunting can be a great way to scare yourself and who doesn't love doing that? There is some cheap ghost-hunting equipment on Amazon that will make the experience that much better. Also, bring a camera and record the whole experience. It will either be funny or embarrassing to look back on. Either way, ghost hunting is a great way to spend All Hallows' Eve.
