Chances are there's something that you're working towards. Some goal or accomplishment you want so badly it's practically all you can think about. Whether it's achieving a 4.0 GPA, landing a summer internship, or scoring a popular leadership position on campus, everyone can relate to the feeling. But simply wanting something isn't enough; you have to make it happen. And of course there are always obstacles when trying to achieve a goal. Here are 5 things that could possibly be holding you back from getting what you really want.
1. You're not stepping out of your comfort zone.
If you ever want anything worthwhile to happen in your life, I suggest you part ways with your comfort zone now. I can see why staying there might be tempting, It's comfortable. You don't have to worry about anything going wrong because you have a safety net. But what if you get comfortable with the idea of being uncomfortable? Yes, it's challenging at first to take the initial steps outside of your comfort zone, but I promise that once you do it you won't regret it. No one reflects back on their life and thinks oh man, if only I had just sat quietly in my comfort zone. But if you stay there, you might find yourself wishing you had the courage to break out of it.
2. You care too much what other people think.
You might find yourself scared to go for something because you fear that other people will judge you. However, I've found that if you're doing your own thing and enjoying yourself, no one seems to bother you. Chances are other people are worried about themselves and their own problems, and probably aren't spending their time thinking about you. And if they are, that's completely their problem. They're the ones wasting the time that could be used to focus on themselves to judge other people, and that's just sad. As Mr. Feeny once taught us all, "If you let people's perception of you dictate your behavior, you will never grow as a person."
3. You're waiting for the "right" time.
Maybe you constantly tell yourself tomorrow, or next week, or some day that isn't today. But why would you wait until tomorrow if that just means you have to wait one more day to start achieving your goals? Tomorrow becomes a sort of a crutch that we lean on to make ourselves feel better about not doing anything today. We always use the excuse that we're waiting for the right time for something, but the truth is there is not a right time to do anything, and if there were, that time would be now. When you rely so heavily on the tomorrows, you forget that they aren't guaranteed. If you knew that tomorrow might never come, what would you do today? Do you think that you would be content in knowing that you put every effort into achieving your dreams, or would wish you hadn't spent so much time waiting around?
4. You're scared of failing.
One of the reasons that so many people don't go out for that job opportunity or ask that cute boy on a date is because they're scared of failing. If you never put yourself out there and take a chance, you can never feel the pain of rejection or failure. But if you never try, the answer is always no--and isn't that a failure in itself? Wouldn't you rather fail, knowing that you gave everything you've got, than sit around wondering what would have happened if you had the courage to pursue your dreams? And in failing, we learn the best lessons. We learn how to pick ourselves up again and keep moving forward. So don't be scared to fail. Embrace all the failures, and learn from them. J.K. Rowling, the most successful author ever, was told that her books would never amount to much so many times before someone decided to publish her. On the subject of failure, she states "It is impossible to live without failing, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all."
5. You try and do it alone.
It can be really hard to ask for help. People sometimes see it as a sign of weakness. But sometimes you need to seek help in order to grow. There's absolutely nothing wrong with turning to someone who's been in a similar situation and asking for guidance. It's also important to have your friends and family by your side when going for something. The people you love will support you no matter what you're trying to achieve, and they'll always be there for you when things get tough and confusing. They are the ones that will keep pushing you when you want to give up. They are the ones that will remind you why you started. Make sure to keep them close, and do the same for them.
