In the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida I am once again reminded of how much we need better gun control regulations. It is absurd that we have automatic weapons floating around civilian life and falling into the hands of people wishing to cause harm to others. I believe that it is absolutely ridiculous that in the United States the following things are more heavily regulated than gun.
1. Peanut Butter
In most schools, kids are not allowed to bring peanut butter in their lunches. Due to the fact that this is a common allergy, it makes sense that schools would ban this item or at least seat those who are allergic at a different table. It does not make sense that there are more precautions taken to prevent kids from getting sent to the hospital from a peanut allergy than from a gun.
2. Sudafed
3. An Abortion
In most states you have to wait 24 hours and attend a counseling session before getting an abortion. The fact that a women's body needs more regulation than purchasing a gun makes no sense.
4. Alcohol
In the United States it is illegal to drink alcohol until you are 21. In contrast, in certain states you can buy a gun at 16 years old. In makes no sense that there is more concern over ones ability to responsibly drink alcohol than the potential dangers of gun ownership.
5. Adopting A Pet
The process of adopting a kitten or puppy can be extremely convoluted. You have to sign a million forms and typically pay a decent sum of money. Some organizations even require a home study. This is slightly more difficult then going to the store and buying a gun.
None of the items on this list were created to cause harm. There are certain cases where they can cause harm and that is why they are regulated. Guns are designed to hurt people and in practice they do. If people want to own a gun that is their prerogative. However, buying that weapon should be more difficult than buying a kinder egg.
