5 Things I Learned from 'Jane the Virgin'

Jane the Virgin has easily become my favorite show since it's late 2014 release. This show has given me a new outlook on life and has opened my eyes to all the opportunities I have lying in front of me. This is a small "thank you" to the creators for not only giving me the chance to discover a lovely show but for showing me that my dreams can be pursued and accomplished.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

1. Never stop dreaming

Pretty obvious one here. This show has taught me to never give up on my dreams. As a soon-to-be college freshman who has a dream of becoming a surgeon, hoping to finally be able to put Dr. in front of my name has definitely been a challenge over the past couple of years but watching Jane pursue her career and finally get the book deal she wanted after having a 4-year-old son and after becoming a widow so early in her life, I learned to keep pushing and never stop believing in myself.

2. Leaving people for your own good is okay

Jane for sure had some struggles dealing with some toxic people in her life. Between Rafael and Jane on and off in a relationship, to Michael's parents not being supportive of Jane and Michael's relationship/marriage. Jane learned she could conquer anything with her writing. She learned that by cutting toxic people out of her life she could raise her son in a healthy environment with an awesome co-parent and amazing, supportive friends and family.

3. Being honest about your feelings is okay

Being someone who tends to hold in her feelings about others or situations, like Jane I learned to be open and express myself through words. I gained my love of writing from Jane because she was so passionate about what she wrote. Jane taught me to show my feelings for people and situations because it would make things easier for you and the other person. Never hold things back. It creates tension and unwanted conflict.

4. Writing is an escape

Growing up I loved reading but could never really imagine myself doing anything other but admiring other people's work. Shortly after beginning the show I started to write and let my feelings flow to my fingertips onto a screen. Writing made me feel less alone and has brought me amazing opportunities, such as being able to be a part of a lovely community and represent them through my writing.

5. Love with all your heart

Finally, the best lesson I have taken from Jane the Virgin is to love unconditionally. Whether it be your spouse, child, family, or friends, everyone deserves love regardless of where they stand in your life and we as people should spread a light of happiness over the world.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
