As my first month of being a college freshman comes to a close, I wanted to reflect on some of the many things I've learned throughout my short journey thus far! To any other freshman or anyone that can relate to this new experience, these are the five things I've learned so far!
1. It's okay to not have a set group of friends right off the bat!
Everyone is in the same boat and just like everything else, it will all fall into place. The first semester is hard. As you are adjusting to this whole new life, trying to get good grades, and avoiding the freshman 15, you’re also pressuring yourself to make your new best friends forever, but it will take time and that's okay!
2. Go to the gym as much as you can, especially if it's free!
College, unlike high school, comes with a lot of downtime. Although homework, clubs, and other extracurricular activities may fill this time, it's always a good idea to schedule just 30 minutes to going to the campus gym. Not only will it help you avoid that dreaded freshman fifteen, it will make you feel good and ready to focus as well!
3. It's so important to get involved.
This is the absolute best time to step outside your comfort zone by joining clubs, student organizations, and attending sorority info sessions. It’s a great way to meet new people and find things you truly will enjoy these next four years.
4. It's okay to go home for a weekend!
Many people want to go out multiple nights every weekend and have that college party experience, but it’s okay to go home and spend the weekend with your family. There will always be more parties, and sometimes, it’s good to miss out on some.
5. Take some time for yourself.
Let's be honest, this is a really weird time. You’re in a whole new place, surrounded by all new people, and have to learn how to be completely independent. So, it's okay if you have to take that study break or sleep in and miss a workout; just take care of yourself.
