5 Things I Want My Younger Brother to Know

My younger brother is about to enter college, and since I've been in school for a couple years longer than him, I feel like I have something to offer. In a lot of ways, he is a lot sharper and more clever than I could ever hope to be. But I still think there are some things I can share. Here are just a few.

1. Ask for help.

I know you're going into college and it is going to feel like you need to accomplish everything yourself. You'll feel like you want to be an adult, or SHOULD be an adult, and you don't want to make anyone think you need them.

I do it still, too. But it works out so much better in the long-run if you just work on what you can yourself, and ask for help when you need it.

2. Work smarter, not harder.

I'm not telling you to cheat, little brother. Absolutely not. But if there's a way to get something done faster that isn't going to sacrifice having it right.... well, you may want to do it that way. I've stressed myself over so much that did not need to worry about, and I wish someone would have just told me I could use an envelope sealer instead of licking 200 envelopes for work or remembered that my building has an elevator for a reason and I don't need to carry everything heavy down three flights of stairs with me.

Work hard, but be smart.

3. I'm always in your corner.

I know it's corny, but I'll always be around for you, a phone call, text, or maybe even a building away. I know that soon you'll be in college and I'll be slowly moving out of it, but I am still always close by, and for better or for worse, we are siblings. We are supposed to be there for each other, and you're stuck with me.

4. If it will take you less than 5 minutes to do it, do it NOW.

This is something I still struggle with. College has a way of making you feel lazier than you have ever been in your whole life. But this is a crucial skill. If you think "I don't want to do this" and then think "it'll only take a second," you should do it. Take out your trash. Put your clothes away. Take a lap around campus. Call mom or dad real quick. Whatever it is, if it can happen quick, make it happen.

5. College isn't everything.

Listen, I love school and all, but lemme share a secret with you. College is super dumb. People are as stupid in college as they are high school, people are still rude, classes are still hard. It's going to suck sometimes. Just remember when it gets hard that college is not everything, and there is more to life than making that 4.0 GPA or getting stressed over one exam or getting upset when something gets in your way. If nothing else, you can pride yourself every day on getting one day closer to graduating.

I know you can do this. So go do it.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
