5 Things My Dad Needs To Know

A list of things that need to be said even if they should go without saying.

5 Things My Dad Needs To Know
Kathryn Boswell

My dad is a very good man, he is kind hearted and always willing to help absolutely anybody at any time. We don’t usually see eye to eye and we argue a lot, neither of us are very good at expressing ourselves verbally. We are a lot alike in many ways, we are both rather introverted, we are both sarcastic, we both have bad tempers, and we both like spicy foods. Together through all the good times and the bad I think it’s about time I made a list of things he should know about how I feel.

1.You need to know that I want to make you proud.

I mess up a lot, and as I have grown up I have made a lot of stupid mistakes and with your help I have learned from them. You stuck by me while I made these mistakes and cheered me on when I made the right choices. I hope you were proud of me when I said my first word when I learned to ride my bike, when I got into college, and now as I start my life. I am going to make a lot more stupid mistakes and I know you’ll be proud when I work through the difficult times.

2.You need to know that I am proud of you

You may not know it but I am proud of what I have seen you do and who you are. You raised me and gave me all the knowledge I needed to grow up. You never gave up on me or our family no matter what. Through thick and through thin we have all stuck together thanks to you. I am proud that you are my father.

3.You need to know that you inspire me to be the best I can be

I have seen you follow your dreams which inspired me to follow my dreams as well. On the other hand, I have also seen you put aside what you wanted in order to benefit others. Seeing your kindness and generosity while I was growing up taught me to be kind to others and put them before myself. I know you have a lot more to teach me.

4.You need to know that you have helped me to love myself

As my parent you have always been my biggest cheerleader. Whenever I am feeling down or feel like I can’t do something you are there telling me I can do it and that you believe in me. I don’t always see myself the way I should but I know you always see me the same and you have shown me.

5.Most importantly, you need to know that I love you without condition

We fight constantly because we disagree on so many things. You may never listen to Drake and I may never enjoy math, but we will always be there for each other and love each other, even if we never say it. Family is complicated, and even familial love does not always go without saying, so this is me saying it so we are clear.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
