Especially with college students, we find ourselves saying "I don't have time to take care of myself". We all know different self care techniques, but often they take up a lot of time during the day that we don't have. These easy techniques take 5 minutes or less, perfect for any time schedule.

1. Deep Breathing

Now, normally when people tell me to deep breathe when I'm upset, I bite their head off. It usually does nothing for me. However, by focusing SOLELY on your breath and closing your eyes for a minute really helps. I like the technique of holding in a deep breath for four counts and letting it out for four counts. There are tons of different deep breathing exercises on the internet, it's just about finding one that works for you.

2. Freshen Up

Sometimes, it's stress relieving to feel a little less gross during the day. If you're feeling tired or run down, freshening up a little will surely help: brush your teeth, wash your hands/face, apply moisturizer, apply lip balm, use some dry shampoo, touch up your makeup or spray some perfume on you. Quick and easy, and you'll feel a lot better.

3. Walk Outside

Just stepping outside for a few minutes and getting some fresh air can definitely help you clear your head. Do your deep breathing technique outside and you'll feel even better.

4. Music

Maybe the music you're listening to is bringing you down, or just in general not helping your mood any. Try changing to something more positive or upbeat. Spotify has thousands of playlists, try searching for one that's positive and fits you.

5. Plan Something

Make a plan for yourself. Whether it's what you're going to eat for dinner, or doing something with your friends this weekend, it's important to distract yourself from your stress by focusing on the positive and getting organized.

Self care is incredibly important, and sometimes incredibly hard to do. Keep in mind that you are in total control of yourself and you are a lot stronger than you think.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
