So it's time for Halloween, which might be the most difficult holiday for Catholic women. Being a women in the Catholic faith is already hard but Halloween throws a couple of extra challenges our way.
1. Trying to find an appropriate Halloween Costume.
So every single costume in the isle for women seems to have the word sexy in front of it: Sexy cat, sexy skeleton, sexy flower and sexy pizza. And yes, all of those are real costumes. It may seem hard to find something that allows you to feel modest and respect your body. Despite what many Halloween stores would have you believe, there are modest options and not all of these are awkward giant costumes. If you are having trouble finding one, there are a lot of DYI costumes you can make and these are usually cuter anyways!
2. Being nervous about all the temptations that might come along with going out on Halloween.
Halloween can get really crazy and sometimes it can feel impossible to find a place to hangout where it's not to wild. The truth is that there are places where you can go and things that you can do that are fun and still follow your morals. As long as you are with your friends you will have fun! If you are worried, y'all can do your own thing and if you go somewhere that has a lot of temptation, it's okay to say no!!
3. Being afraid of all the paranormal Halloween things because your faith forces you to acknowledge that there really is evil in the world.
This is the time of year that everyone wants to watch scary movies and go to haunted houses. It might seem hard to know where to draw the line. There are different views on if you should participate in this stuff or not. It is true that you can invite evil in to your life but God also knows what your true intentions were. It is your choice what you do but if you chose to participate you can always pray after and ask the Lord for protection!
4. People telling you that you shouldn't celebrate Halloween because it's a pagan holiday.
Halloween actually has Catholic origins; "All Hallows Eve." Hallow is actually an old English word for saint. The practices have changed since the beginning of this holiday but it is definitely okay to celebrate.
5. Making sure you are not too tired for All Saints Day Mass the next day because it is a holy day of obligation.
Yes, the day after Halloween is a holy day of obligation, one of the few days a year that we are asked to go to church that are not Sunday. It may be hard to get up for it and even harder not to fall asleep during it but we Catholic women and God made us strong!
Halloween might be a little harder on us but that does not mean we can not enjoy this holiday! We just have to be a little more careful than other people, but we have to do that everyday already, so one more won't hurt!
