I admit, I am currently experiencing extreme writer's block. For me, writer's block is extremely frustrating, but there are ways to combat it. Here are my top five strategies to alleviate even the worst case of writer's block.
1. Change your environment.
I find a change in environment to be very helpful. Sometimes it is simply a matter of changing rooms or switching libraries to avoid distractions. You may not even realize that you are being distracted, but subconsciously the sounds and movements of the space could be causing you to lose focus.
2. Eat a snack.
I know when I am hungry, the only thing I can think about is food. Thus, if you are hungry (or even if you are not) it's always a good idea to take a quick break and get some food in your stomach. Once revitalized by sustenance, your brain will become sharper.
3. Free write.
If you really don't know what to write about, just start writing. Write the first thoughts that come to your head! This process will, at least, get your words on the page and hopefully will help get your creative juices flowing.
4. Listen to music.
As I mentioned before, writer's block can sometimes be a matter of just losing focus and being distracted. However, studies say that music, particularly jazz and classical, helps you focus. Thus, listening to music may be a good way to channel your inner worker and focus your thoughts.
5. Talk to a friend or peer about the topic.
Bouncing ideas off someone can be extremely helpful. Just talking it out with a friend or a peer can help you organize your thoughts, which allows you to begin writing coherently.
