In an Indian household, I heard of many different superstitions. Some I thought to be sort of weird and crazy, so I came up with a list of some the few I heard while growing up. Enjoy!
1. You can’t enter the temple while on your period
As a female, I wasn't allowed to enter the temple or close the temple at home. Back in ancient times, women were thought to be dirty on their period, so they could not enter the temple or even the kitchen. Nowadays things have become more lenient, but many still believe in this superstition. It's also important that a female doesn't get married during her period and there's certain timing for it.
2. You shouldn’t step over someone otherwise they will become shorter
Growing up, this one was a personal favorite. My mom and relatives always told me to be careful stepping over someone while they are sitting or sleeping because they could become one inch shorter. If you do happen to step over someone, you have to go back, and not step over them. I have a feeling this superstition is still practiced today if even it sounds silly. I once stepped over someone while they were sitting and they asked me to back and go around because they were afraid of becoming shorter. This superstition gives me the chills.
3. Hanging a lemon and seven green chilies
When I moved houses in the 5th grade, I watched my mom put a lemon and seven chilies over the outside lamps to ward off evil spirits from entering. I thought this was ridiculous and insane, but I can't argue if you want bad vibes in your home. Apparently, there is an old story about the god of misfortune, and she would eat hanging lemon and chilies instead of entering homes or shops.
4. Don’t cut your nails after dark
This one is another personal favorite. Since I was little, I was told not to cut my nails at night, because apparently bad things will happen to you. I didn't want anything bad to happen, so I never cut my nails at night. I legitimate have a fear of it. Also, I googled why it so bad and apparently it's because it's considered an insult to God.
5. Adding one rupee
Have you ever received birthday money that is a dollar over the nice round number it should be? Well, be grateful for that, because it's a part of a superstition. Apparently adding the extra dollar or "rupee" is good luck and many envelopes in India already have one rupee added for your convince
Moreover, growing up in an Indian household and culture gives an experience of different superstitions. I know some are crazy or insane and doesn't make sense but it's still interesting to learn. #Brownandproud
