I have probably watched the new Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer 10 times since it was released last week, so needless to say I’m excited.
Not only is it the long awaited 8th installment of one of my favorite franchises, but after Carrie Fisher’s death last year, it’s been a long wait to see General Leia’s next and possibly last chapter. After watching the trailer numerous times and reading all the analyses online, there were 5 moments in the trailer that made me lean forward in my seat begging for more. Why does December have to be so far away?
1. Porgs!
I had to get this cute little guy out of the way. Even though we have only seen a few clips of him so far, I can tell, like BB-8 for The Force Awakens, that he is going to be the hot new toy for the holiday season. Although I must admit since he was presented alongside Chewbacca, I half expected him to be Han Solo, before quickly remembering his fate in the last film. Either way, I’m excited to see how this new character interacts with this trilogy’s trio as they fight the Empire.
2. Luke's metal hand.
Reminiscent of Michael Angelo’s The Creation of Adam, this shot gives a little more insight into the Luke and Rey dynamic that we were teased in the previous film’s last scene. Since director Rian Johnson confirmed shortly after the trailer’s release that Luke is indeed ‘the Last Jedi’ the title refers to, I can’t wait to see what this means for Rey. After all, the ending of the trailer pointed at a possible Kylo Ren and Rey team up. Although I personally think that they edited the trailer to make the viewer believe that, the possibly adds an interesting alliance development for Rey as it looks like Luke will be teaching her the ways of the force.
3. Rey Jedi training
Following my anticipation from the last still, this shot gets me excited to see Rey training with Luke. Although Luke has been confirmed to be ‘the Last Jedi,’ when the film’s title was originally released, I thought the title would be referring to Rey or Finn. This shot reminded me of my incorrect thinking and made me intrigued to see Rey’s role in this film. If she isn’t going to be a Jedi, what will she be?
4. Not your average Poe
Poe Dameron is one of my favorite characters from this trilogy. His dynamic with Rey and Finn in the previous installment was great to watch, and his opening scene in The Force Awakens made me know he was a character to watch out for. I love this shot because it reminded me of his excellent piloting skills that I couldn’t get enough of, especially in the scene where he gives Finn his name. I can’t wait to watch more action packed flight sequences, some of which were hinted at in the trailer, I’m looking at you Kylo Ren and General Leia standoff scene.
5. Finn vs. Plasma
Finally, my favorite shot from the new trailer was the quick fight sequence between Captain Phasma and Finn. Reminiscent of the “Traitor!” fight scene in Episode 7, this scene looks like the stand out fight scene in this film. Although this looks like a lightsaber-less fight sequence, I can’t wait to see Finn face off against his former boss.
