June is just about over, which means that most of us have less than two months left of summer. Where did the time go? Summer is supposed to be a time filled with adventure, tan lines, popsicles, concerts and lots and lots of hanging out with your friends, right? At least that's the way it used to be. Yet life moves forward, and as we grow older, summer becomes less about slip n' slides and bike rides to get ice cream, and more about money-making and resume-building. Between work, internships and summer classes, it might feel like your summer is slipping away (and not on a sudsy tarp). Summer is supposed to be a break, and while you may not be able to hit the pool deck on the regular, or see your friends everyday, there are a few steps you can take to try to make the most out of what's left of your summer.
1. Get a planner.
I know, I know, planners are for school, not for summer! But trust me, if you want to optimize the time you have left, you need to be able to visualize your time. I like physical planners that I can write in that show each day and each hour. However, if you prefer, Google calendar can work great. Or, you can create your own planner just using pen and paper!
2. Fill in your obligations.
Block off anything that you have to do. Include work, class, homework, sleep, appointments and any family or other obligations. (Netflix binges do not count as obligations, no matter how obligated you feel to finish "OITNB" in one day.)
3. Visualize your free time.
Take a look at the white space that remains on your calendar. This is your free time. This will vary for everyone, of course, but seeing a visual representation of your unscheduled time will give you a better understanding of what you can realistically accomplish.
4. Set and prioritize goals.
What do you want to do in your remaining weeks of summer? Is your goal to read a book? To begin an exercise plan? To spend a weekend somewhere? To see your friends often? Make a list of goals, but make sure to prioritize these goals. If you want to accomplish more than your time allows, you may need to hold off on some of these goals for the time being. (Note: It's totally okay to make "relaxing" or "watch Netflix" one of your goals! It's healthy to purposely relax! Just be careful--Netflix is known to suck you in and make you lose track of time! It's not a bad idea to give yourself a Netflix time limit!)
5. Fill in the white space!
Start with your most important goal, and fill it in. When are you going to do it? For how long? Continue with each goal, until you finish the goals, or you run out of time. Remember, you shouldn't have every single moment of your life planned out. Even with your summer goals added in, your planner should still have some white space. It's important to give yourself time to eat, relax and breath. Plus, you need a little wiggle room in case something unexpected comes up!
Here are some times on how to accomplish various goals.
Read a book: If you find it hard to find time for this, try substituting reading for your pre-sleep Twitter scroll. Plan to read for a half hour, or maybe plan to read one chapter each night before you go to bed. Not only will this give you a specified time to read, but it also helps you fall asleep a lot easier than looking at your phone screen does! Note: reading can be great if you choose the right book! Make sure it interests you!
Go away for a weekend: With a busy schedule, this can be very difficult to do. It can't be spur of the moment! Look ahead now, and see if you have any weekends free. If you do, plan for it now! If you don't have a whole weekend free, maybe you have one day. Even planning and going on a day trip can be rewarding, and make you feel like you got a break in your busy schedule!
Start an exercise plan: It doesn't need to be rigorous--just 30 minutes a day is great! Maybe wake up a half hour early, and work out before you go to work! Or make it an evening, after dinner workout. You don't need a gym membership or fancy equipment. There's plenty of body weight workouts (equipment free) online, especially on Pinterest. If you need a place to start, here's what I'm doing. One day of running, one day of cross-training cardio, one day of weights focused on a specific muscle group, two days of cardio and a full body workout and two days of rest. Find what works for you, but remember, exercise makes you healthier and happier!
Hang out with friends: Just like planning for a weekend away, you need to plan ahead! Look for days/evenings that you have free, and start organizing something with you friends. With everyone balancing work, classes and more, spur of the moment get-togethers aren't so realistic anymore!
While you may not be able to accomplish everything you want this summer, a little organization and planning can help you make the most out of the rest of your summer days!
