5 Things to Do During the Spring Semester Break

When you’re in college, break doesn’t always fall under warm weather, so you’ve got to get creative.

You know that moment when you’ve just finished your last class of the week and it dawns on you that you don’t have a single class next week because the break is finally here and you breathe a sigh of relief and then you realize... you have nothing planned. Not that you were planning anything (not many people do), but it would be nice to do something with your time that doesn’t involve scrolling through social media for hours on end.

So, here’s a quick list of five things you can do for spring break. Especially if you’re like me and you didn’t book a flight anywhere... .and you haven’t contacted your friends yet... and you’ve just been surviving for the past two weeks and it’s been chaotic from one assignment to the next. Oh yikes.

1. Catch up on your class’s readings.

Not the most interesting of past time’s, but a necessary one if you have assignments due after the break is over; or if you were unable to finish a reading that you were actually enjoying. Pick one day out of the week to focus completely on any loose-ends from the first half of the semester, as well as work on assignments that are due after the break is over. It’s aggravating, especially when you haven’t had a break in weeks, but it’s good to get a head start before you’re thrown right back into the swing of things.

2. Read a book you’ve been wanting to read. Or watch a television show. And so on.

There’s no better time to indulge yourself than during spring break. Read that book that’s been sitting on your bedside table for weeks, binge an entire season of that tv show that you haven’t touched in months. Or binge several seasons, or several shows, whatever suits you. Catch up on Marvel movies. Play your favorite video game for hours on end. Do something that relaxes you, so when you come back you’ll be re-charged enough to finish the rest of the semester.

P.S. Go even further than just indulging. Order food from your favorite restaurant (multiple times? yes.), purchase a gift for yourself, sleep late into the afternoon, do anything you want. Treat yourself!

3. Take a day trip somewhere fun.

Spring break’s during college tend to happen at the worst time—this might apply to northeast students specifically. It’s too warm for there to still be snow, too cold to do something outdoorsy. Yet, if you think hard enough—and you know, you’re not going on vacation—there’s always something fun to do in the area. Museum’s, shopping malls, movie theatres, and bowling alleys are all excellent examples of things to do on one of your free days.

Taking a trip to the city of your choice is also always a good idea. Cities are filled with surprises. Whether it be an attraction you’ve never heard of or fairs and celebrations that pop up out of nowhere and are gone within a day or two. So make a quick search on what to do in your area, you never what you might find.

4. Clean up your room, your apartment, your house, etc.

Before the semester resumes, it’s good to do a full sweep of your specified area. It could be as large as your entire house or as small as your desk, but no matter the size it, cleaning is still a good way to spend some time. After weeks of hard work, going to bed late, getting up early, rushing out the door, tossing laundry to and fro, and more, it’s easy for things to get messy. Even if you’ve been picking up after yourself, double check everything.

Have you dusted recently? Vacuumed, washed your bedding, wiped the mirrors, mopped the floor? Has anything fallen under your bed, are there granola bar wrappers stuffed at the bottom of your backpack? Did something break a while ago that you haven’t gotten around to fixing? Make sure to do a deep clean so when spring break is over, you’ll feel fresh, everything will be organized, and it’ll feel like you’re starting the second half of the semester on a clean slate.

5. Start a new hobby.

There’s no time to start a new project like the one week of peace amidst the chaos! The smart option here is actually to wait until you know you’ll have more time to work on your new hobby, but this list is about having fun on spring break, so let’s throw planning out the window.

If you have a hobby you’ve been dying to start, try it out! Is it painting, rock climbing, bird watching, jewelry making, antiquing, scrapbooking—the list will go on, we’re all different. But if you do have an interest you’ve been waiting to delve into, go for it during the break. If you end up disliking it, you’ll get that idea out of the way and if you end up loving it, you have something to look forward to once the semester is over!

That’s all this writer has got. Hopefully, there’s one thing here that jolted an idea or two of your own, or one of these reminded you that yeah, there are a bunch of energy bar wrappers at the bottom of your backpack that really should be thrown away.

Have a good spring break!

Oh, right. Bonus Tip #6: Sleep. Sleep as much as you can. That’s the best spring break any college student could ever have.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
