How quickly do you break your New Year's resolutions? Why not consider doing something a little easier?

With 2017 gone and 2018 here, it’s that time of year where everyone starts making and breaking New Year’s resolutions! Be honest with yourself for a moment, exactly how many of your resolutions for 2017 did you actually end up keeping right through the end of the year?

Probably not a lot—and you wouldn’t be alone either. Millions of people make resolutions every year that they can’t stick to.

A big part of the reason for that is because making huge life changes overnight isn’t easy. It’s no easier to do on January 1st than it would be to do randomly on March 19th. So, instead of buying that $500 gym membership or throwing away all of your holiday leftovers, why not consider making smaller resolutions for yourself that are easier to stick with?

1. Breaking bad habits

Are you a nail biter? Or maybe you spend too much time looking at your phone during conversations? The reality is that many of us have small bad habits that we do without even thinking about it most of the time. Well, why not use the new year to break some of those? Make it a point to become more aware of these habits so that you’re more likely to notice when you are doing them.

Tell friends and family to point out when you are doing your habit that you desire to break, as having an outside source telling you to stop will make you more inclined to do so. Also consider researching different ways in which you can go about breaking your bad habits online, as there are many different methods that can be applied to specific habits.

Maybe by the end of the year, your nails will be looking a little smoother, or you’ll find that you don’t need to check your phone as often as you used to while having a conversation with others.

2. Saving up small amounts of cash

Do you have spare change sitting around your place that you have a tendency of losing? Or maybe it’s all making a mess in the depths of your wallet? Perhaps you even have scattered one dollar bills buried deep in pockets or car seats?

Well, why not consider cleaning up all of that loose change and tossing it into a bucket or a piggy bank? The truth is that the little things add up, and all of those extra coins can add up to a few bucks in a couple of weeks.

So, start saving money in a small way by keeping all of your loose change somewhere, and then don’t touch it until the end of the year. You might find that come December, you can treat yourself to something nice with that extra cash!

3. Taking it easy on the exercise

While wanting to drop a few pounds or get into shape is a wonderful thing to do for your health, sometimes exercise can be an incredibly daunting task. Far too often, people will jump right into intense work-out routines or purchase year-long gym memberships when they decide on the resolution of getting into shape.

However, for people who aren’t used to doing these activities on a daily basis, it can serve as being exhausting and makes doing it every day nearly impossible.

That’s why starting with simple forms of exercise can be far more effective. Instead of making your resolution going to the gym every single day, start instead with taking a long walk every day or every other day.

It may not be as intense as doing a 5K on a treadmill, but it’s an easy start that you’re more inclined to do and ultimately aids in making you healthier as well. Plus, the more you get used to falling into a routine, the more inclined you are to add on to that routine later.

4. Eating something healthy

Like with exercising, dieting is a popular New Year’s resolution that people jump into and attempt to quit their old eating habits cold turkey. However, doing that is a lot tougher than it may seem, and ultimately results in people falling back into their old eating habits more quickly than they anticipate.

So, instead of dropping all the carbs and fats, try having a little less of those things at first and substituting them for a healthy snack instead.

Make an attempt to have a healthy meal or snack once per day by cutting out one unhealthy food that you are replacing it with. That way, you don’t need to quit the foods that you love right off the bat, but you are still improving your health and lifestyle by consuming more things that are good for you.

5. Doing small acts of kindness

Being a nicer person is a fairly vague resolution. It’s easy to say that you want to be nicer, but sometimes it can be hard to figure out where to start.

As such, if your goal is to be nicer, then why not start by making it a point to do a simple act of kindness each day? Small gestures are often noticed and appreciated by others, and if you are consistently doing them then that will ultimately contribute to your overall character and how others perceive you.

With that in mind, offer to treat a friend or coworker to lunch, or pick up the phone and call a relative you haven’t spoken to in a while, or even little things like holding the door open for someone or allowing someone into your lane during traffic hours count. Little acts can go a long way, and you might find that by the end of this year, your acts of kindness are being paid forward to others as well.

So, instead of focusing on the big things this year, put in some extra effort to focus on the little things. In doing so, you may find the results far more rewarding than setting a large resolution for yourself that you end up breaking.

At least if you make some smaller resolutions and stay loyal to them, then at the end of 2018 you can say that you stuck with them to the end.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
