I know what you're thinking. How can outspoken rapper Cardi B bear any resemblance to Miss Saigon's sweet but fierce Kim? Turns out they have more in common than you think.
1) Both took jobs of a sexual nature to get themselves out of a bad situation
Cardi took a job stripping after her old job at a grocery store didn't pay her enough to buy a new apartment and escape living with her abusive boyfriend. Her mom had also kicked her out, so moving back home wasn't an option.
Kim started working in Dreamland to earn money because everyone in her village got killed during the war, and she had no other skills, and American soldiers stationed in Vietnam paid money to get dances from and/or have sex with Vietnamese prostitutes.
2) Both heavily relied on men
On her old reality show, Cardi regularly talked about letting men take care of her financially, such as paying her rent, but clarified that she didn't need to have sex with them for that to happen.
In Miss Saigon, the only way Kim could get to America is by marrying Chris since she had Vietnamese citizenship. Plus by the end of the musical *spoiler warning* Kim had to have faith that Chris and his wife Ellen would take her son to America after she died so he could have a better life.
3) Both baby situations are not the best
Kim did not stay alive long enough to see her son grow into a man. He was left to be raised by the father that abandoned both of them and didn't care enough to work harder to find Kim after the Vietnam War ended. The wife he replaced her with wasn't crazy about raising him in the first place.
Similarly, the father of Cardi's baby did not stick around and she will be raising the child on her own.
4) Both are fighters but in different ways
Cardi B would not hesitate to throw a shoe at someone and start a fight if they rubbed her the wrong way, or call out people that were mean to her in the past.
Kim shot and killed her ex-fiancee, who obtained a high rank in the Vietnamese government when he threatened to kill Kim's son.
5) Both paved a way for women of color
Kim is portrayed as a multifaceted and complex character, which is a big deal for Asian representation. Although her character isn't completely devoid of stereotypes, it's a step in the right direction.
Cardi B meanwhile has stated that she's proud that she's making money while not being white. If there's anything that her young fans do take away from her, this would be a good concept to choose.
