5 Signs Your Mom Really Is Your Best Friend
Mike Summer

Growing up, I’ve always been close with my mom. I mean, at sixteen, we definitely got in petty fights over things that I thought were super important. Now, as an older and more mature young woman, I can see just how stupid those fights were, and how much she really has been there for me through it all. She’s been the one to cry, laugh, smile, succeed, and fail with me, and has never left my side. My mom is my best friend, and if you’re thinking that yours maybe is too, then these tell-tale signs may just help you figure it out once and for all.

1. You text...all the time!

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve texted my mom about the cute boy that I saw in the dining hall, how I almost pet a squirrel on the quad, or how I aced my test (or totally bombed it, but let's try and be positive here). When you reach a point where you can literally tell your mom about everything that’s happened in your life, that when your relationship really blossoms, and brings you even closer.

2. You get excited when she offers to buy you lunch

I mean for one, food is always a good idea. But when your mom offers to buy you lunch, you know that it means a time where you can both just sit down with each other and talk about anything and everything. It's like a date, but with your mom, but honestly, that's the best kind of date, because mom's always love you no matter what, even when you’re shoveling Chinese food into your face like no tomorrow.

3. You ask her opinion on everything

Whether is an outfit for a party, a new boy you think you want to date, or just a new friend, you always ask your mom for her opinion. It’s because you know she has the guts to tell you what is and isn’t a good idea, even when it’s what you don’t want to here. I promise you, a mom will always be able to spot a fake friend or a bad boy from a mile away, just remember that.

4. She knows what (or who) you truly like and dislike

Whether it be your favorite movie, artist, ice cream flavor, or just your favorite way to spend your day off work, she knows exactly the right answer. She always knows exactly what to get you for your birthday or Christmas, even when you didn’t ask for anything, and the exact people to avoid at a small town function because your friendship fell apart back in high school. Mom’s really have a knack for reading your mind, once your realize this, you start to realize that she really has been right all along, even if you’re still actively denying it like I do every day.

5. When people tell you that you remind them of your mom, you can’t help but smile

Knowing that other people see a piece of my mom in me is the greatest compliment that I could ever receive. Mom’s are beautiful, amazingly strong women that run our world, and to be compared to one is one of the highest honors in the world. I can only hope to grow up to be half the woman that my mom is, and by knowing that I have her attributes in me, it makes me that much more excited to see who I will be in the future, not only as a mom but just a person as well.

Knowing that your mom is your best friend, just like mine is, is what makes life a little better. She makes the good days better and the bad days easier, and when push comes to shove, you know that she'll always be in your corner when you need her. I love you with my whole heart mom, and it makes me proud to call you my forever best friend.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
