Relativism Doesn't Make Any Sense, Especially Considering These 5 Things

Relativism is something commonly used today. Most wouldn't know it by name. We often will follow up something with, "at least for me" or "I wouldn't personally do it but who am I to stop others". The definition of relativism is the belief that there is no absolute truth. This means that there is no overarching truth that everyone believes. That there is no truth that is true for everyone. That sounds as if it is a sound thought, right? Here's five reasons why it is an illogical thought.

1. It is self-defeating.

It is self defeating because the idea of relativism is really this: "it is true for everyone that there is no truth for everyone." Not so logical now, is it? Relativism is the belief that there is not absolute truth but the one absolute truth that there is no absolute truth. Following? The more it is broken down, the more illogical it sounds.

2. It excludes math and science from the equation.

If relativism was a real way to live, why does it exclude math and science from this belief? Think about it. In the world of relativism, no one will ever doubt that 2 + 2+ =4. No one is trying to convince you that 2+2 really equals 5. Why would they exclude it then. Because there would be no point to math and science if everything was relative. I could easily pass a math test with all the "wrong" answers then because the answers I gave "were right to me." The job of a teacher would be pointless because we all would have our own beliefs so no one would need to teach us what is right or wrong.

3. Moral beliefs and laws would be pointless.

We are all allowed to have our own opinions, but sometimes opinions are not law. In my opinion I could want the speed limit to be 50 mph in a 40mph zone but the speed limit is still going to be 40mph. With relativism, we would not need things such as traffic lights or even locks on our doors. Anyone could rob from someone else or kill someone else without a single consequence because it was their "truth." Want to live in a world of relativism? No, I would not want to either.

4. Opinions are great, but sometimes you're still wrong.

We all would love to live in a world where we're always right, because no one ever likes to be wrong. When in a discussion about something, there is only one true answer sometimes. When talking about facts, unless both people come out with the same conclusion, someone is always going to be wrong. Relativism is often seen as a way to stop people from getting offended. There is no such thing as no one getting offended. Someone is always going to be offended no matter what. In the world of relativism, two people might express "their truth." They have different "truths" so they will then believe that the other person's truth is not the truth.

5. There would be chaos.

Having everyone believing their own truths, jobs would be pointless because no one is going to listen to others "impose" their truth on them. The world would be in absolute chaos. Relativism defeats the purpose of community, religion and just about everything that we as human beings really cherish. With relativism everyone's "rights and truths" are imposing on other people's rights and truths. The world would be like the purge but instead of for just 24 hours, it would be constantly.

So as you can see, relativism is just a bunch of people mistaking opinions for facts and wanting to be right and have their way all the time.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
