5 Reasons Why I Hate Winter

Winter brings out the worst in me.

Some people love the winter time. They love the puffy jackets, wearing too many layers, skiing, drinking hot drinks, all while having Christmas music on repeat. But for me? I personally hate the winter. I can't ski to save my life, I can no longer indulge in my favorite iced drinks, I get too hot in my millions of layers, and Christmas music gets under my skin. I typically hate being pessimistic, but I think everyone has a time where they just want to vent about winter. On that note, some of the worst things about winter are:

Everyone gets sick this time of year.

It doesn't matter how many layers I put on, or how much sleep I get, the changing of the seasons and going from the heated buildings to the freezing outside always manages to get me sick. And at college, once one of your friends is sick, everyone else manages to get sick. It is a never-ending cycle.

You REALLY dread walking to class.

There is nothing that dampens your morning like waking up for your morning class in the freezing cold. It is already hard enough to get out of bed to go to class on any morning, but in the winter it seems ten times worse.

You lose motivation to go anywhere.

Whether it's going somewhere fun on weekends, walking to the library late at night, or even just leaving your room to get food, you literally dread going anywhere. It is such a process to put on all the necessary layers you need to feel some sort of warmth when you go outside, and you find yourself questioning whether it's worth it to leave your room at all.

Everyone's mood is a reflection of the weather.

When the sun is out on a warm summer, spring, or fall day, it is hard to feel bad about the day because the weather makes you feel so much happier and relaxed. But in the winter, if you are already in a bad mood, the weather will not be there to pick you up. In fact, the day will seem worse than it actually is because of the cold temperatures.

It becomes crunch time for work and finals.

As if we weren't already stressed enough because of the bad weather, it feels even worse because the workload starts to increase and the classes seem to pack everything in before final exams.

But on a positive note: even though winter can suck sometimes, I guess hating winter gives me all the reasons to look forward to the spring, summer, and fall!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
