Ever wonder why college kids are ready to go back after the summer?

In high school, everyone is so caught up in everyone else's drama, basically carrying extra weight that isn't actually needed. Everyone was in each other's business and nobody cares about each others feelings. High school was a time of insecurity and a conscious reminder that someone is always better than you. In college, you are basically a new person. You can be the same person you were in high school of course, but here you have the freedom to choose who you want to be and who you want to spend your time with. College is a time of experimentation and trying new things just because they are available to you. Most people get to experience this time of change, so take advantage of this time and the reasons why this time is so great.

1. No Parents

At home, you are constantly under watch and rule. Here at college, you make your own rules as to how you live (but you still have to act like a civilized human being). Basically, you are living on your own and you have to take all the stuff you learned from your parents and apply it to your own life.

2. Less class time

In college, you may have four or five classes each semester and maybe two or three classes a day. This means you have a lot of free time, more than you had in high school. Some may choose to study and some may choose to party, but the great thing is you actually have a choice.

3. You are surrounded by friends, always.

You had your friends in high school of course, but you didn't live together. In college, it is like a 24 hour sleepover. You pass them on your way to class and you might even live with them.

4. There are a lot more clubs to join and things to do

I was a part of chorus and marching band in high school, which was pretty cool. In college, we have Greek life and tons of clubs to join and you can do as many as your schedule can take. For me, I like to be a part of something but also have time to recharge the social battery by being by myself. It can be a perfect balance between the social life you want and the private time you need.

5. You get to be who you want to be

Maybe you didn't like who you were in high school. This is the time to change that. I was shy and just a nervous person in high school. I regret not doing more with my time there. I would have joined more clubs and done better if I had the confidence and knowledge of the world like I do now. Knowing this, I like the person I am now. It has made me who I am and in college, you will find yourself.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
