I wasn't quite sure what to make of "Granite Flats" when I first started to watch it. It's a basic premise: "The show is set in a small Colorado town in the early 1960's during the Cold War, and follows several of the town's citizens as mysterious and potentially dangerous circumstances arise" (Wikipedia). But what sets it apart from other shows and movies with similar plot lines is that the focus is mostly on the kids that live in the town and band together to try and solve a much bigger mystery than they originally thought was there.
It's a show not a lot of people have really heard of so I'm here to broaden your horizons. And, don't worry, it's on Netflix so it's right there at your fingertips. So here are five reasons that all of you should start watching "Granite Flats".
1. There's government secrets and espionage.
The show focuses on Project MKUltra, the CIA's attempt at mind-control. The intentions of the project are hidden away from prying eyes. But not all eyes can be pulled away. Some people figure out how to dig a little deeper. Will it all be exposed?
2. You can't trust anybody. And that makes it exciting.
The people you believe to be on your side are not. The people you've learned to distrust are actually completely trustworthy. Don't trust your instincts. Second guess everything. And then, maybe, you'll have figured it out.
3. Family, and what it means to be one, is a central theme.
Being related by blood doesn't automatically make you family. Family is a figurative term, one that describes the bonds we develop with like-minded and wonderful people. "Granite Flats" explores that throughout the show's run, dealing with death, distrust, secrets, fostering, and much more in the family department.
4. The characters are INCREDIBLE and well-developed.
Whether you're talking about Arthur Milligan's strength and bravery, Wallace Jenkins' character development, Alice White's wit and solid stance, or Lt. Frank Quincy's beautiful portrayal of a suffering soldier, the characters throughout the show are all wonderfully created and well-thought out. From the very beginning, the characters pull you in to the story and make you care about them throughout the show's entire three season run.
5. Madeline and Timmy. Enough said.
This is the couple you can't help but root for from the beginning of the series until the very end. You watch them slowly fall for each other, figuring out what it means to love. They're just kids but they are capable of such strong emotions. The writers of the show kept their relationship simple and innocent, perfect for both the time it is set in and the age of the characters.
