Luxembourg is a tiny nation landlocked between France, Germany, and Belgium. Since it's right on the trail of popular destinations, it's surprising that this country doesn't receive many visitors. It's more affordable than Andorra and easier to access than Liechtenstein. Even for its small size, the country is still certainly worth the look. However, unlike other cities, Luxembourg offers a certain coziness you rarely find elsewhere.
1. Visit the Old City Fortifications
A UNESCO Heritage site, the city is home to a network of tunnels that stretches some 17 kilometers. Stepping down into the old town, visitors will catch a quick glimpse of the elevated sentry posts. The history of the tunnels stretches back to 1644 as a reinforcement for the adjacent royal dwellings. The tunnels are large enough to house armored soldiers, horses, and even workshops. Today visitors are able to explore the sprawling subterranean passageways. Still in great condition, the Bock Casemates are worth a half-day exploration.
2. Get lost in the architectural maze
I'm not even joking when I describe the centrum as a maze. Just take a step down one direction and you'll find yourself discovering everything from modern architecture to castle ruins. A fond moment was when I randomly stepped off a hill-side and discovered a family of storks bathing in the stream. I walked a few hundred meters back uphill and found myself in the main shopping district. Getting lost while traveling is a right of passage and this is the most rewarding city to do it in. Oh, but just be a bit careful of traffic. Roads carve through some tight nooks that might surprise you.
3. Take scenic photos
What would an article be if I didn't add a photography piece? Numerous lookouts are strewn throughout the city. A major advantage is that photographers can capture an assortment of modern and historical sights that aren't an eyesore. One of the most popular locations is the Corniche. The Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge is another ideal locale that overlooks the Vauban Towers. Just about anywhere you tread you'll find the perfect spot to capture this urban masterpiece. And you won't have to battle the annoying onslaught of selfie-takers everywhere.
4. Enjoy tranquility
One of the unique features of Luxembourg City is the fulfilling tranquility. Sure smaller European cities have a bit of coziness attached. But here you won't be engulfed by the Monaco style gambling. Neither will you be crammed with the tourist bustle of Andorra. Places in the old city are rarely dense with visitors. Luckily, the winding maze of the region offers many hideouts to enjoy the scenic views. Just grab a book, your camera, and enjoy the escape.
If you're ever on the road in Europe and are urging for a break between the noise of other cities, give Luxembourg a shot. It's a scenic masterpiece well worth your time. I originally intended to just see what the city had to offer. I was greatly surprised by the picturesque qualities around every winding corner. Give it a go.
