With everyone rushing this week, I feel compelled to write an article pertaining to all the reasons I didn’t rush. This article is no way intended to take away from the hard work that goes into sororities. Being an easy way to make friends, sororities certainly have their perks. For me, the cons outweighed the pros. I never rushed, so everything I say is said from the perspective of an outsider. Here are all the reasons I didn’t rush.
1. The costs
It’s no lie, sororities cost a lot of money. They’re a few hundred JUST to rush. You may not even get an offer. Just to show up and get a tee shirt, you have to pay hundreds of dollars. Then, once you agree to join the sorority you’re stuck with hundreds of dollars worth of dues. Now, I’ve heard of some sororities helping girls to cover the cost of dues, but the costs don’t end there. You will be plagued with hundreds of opportunities to buy t shirts, you’ll need a fancy dress for formal, you’ll have to spend an abundance on your appearance, and more.
2. You are told what to do
From being told what color to wear to where to be and when, you’re constantly being told what to do. Some girls like this, but this girl doesn't.
3. It’s a huge time sink.
I’m sorry, but it is. You are expected to go to chapter, fundraising events, other events, etc. It never ends. There are some girls who genuinely enjoy going to all of the various events sororities expect you to be at, but I knew I would not be happy having somewhere to be every time I turn around.
4. The process is incredibly shallow
The sisters of the chapters get all of 30 seconds to get to know you. 30 seconds. Then you’re off to the next one or whatever. Can you really have a meaningful conversation in 30 seconds? Can you really get to know someone in 30 seconds? No, you’re judging someone entirely by their appearance which I find incredibly shallow.
5. I personally wouldn't enjoy it
Some girls LOVE never ending meetings, allotting huge amounts of time, not evening actually enjoying every aspect of it. To put that much time into something, I would have to absolutely love it. Greek life just wasn't something for me.
