"Binge Season" is always upon us, isn't it? In the midst of an uneventful Spring Break, I started watching Netflix's House of Cards and was instantly hooked. Politics, drama, scandal-- who could resist? Frank and Claire Underwood, portrayed by Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, are by far my favorite couple in all of television history. Their admiring looks, merciless perseverance and the nightly stress-relieving cigarette breaks makes them the ultimate power couple, especially when it comes to politics. Here are a few reasons why:
1. Their love for each other is only contested by their love for power.
It's is no secret that the Underwoods are madly in love with one another. In fact, their love for one another could potentially be the only genuine thing they encompass. (They ARE politicians, after all.) In one of the first episodes of Season 1, Frank tells his audience “I love that woman. I love her more than sharks love blood”. Toward the later end of the series thus far, as Claire becomes ambassador to the United Nations (with the reluctant help of her husband), the couple goes through a series of conflicts that almost compromise their marriage: who has the power, which one of them wants the power, which one of them really deserves the power, etc. While on a temporary hiatus at her sick and widowed mother's home in Texas, the dialogue of interactions between Claire and her mother seem to mirror those that convey the helplessness Claire once felt while with Frank, as Claire monopolizes over her mother to gain financial control and repore among the nation for her own good.
2. When the couple establishes a goal, they do what is necessary to get the job done.
Okay, can we take a minute? By the end of Season 2, Frank Underwood became President of the United States having never once been on a ballot. He, alongside his equally vicious counterpart Claire, manipulated his way from holding office as Majority Whip of the House of Representatives to the cushy seat behind his desk in the Oval Office. Whether it be by revealing the truth or starting a rumor, the couple employ all odds in their favor. Weakness is their best friend. Coming as no surprise, by the end of Season 4 we're all well aware of their scheme to become running mates for the upcoming election.3. After a heated argument, they easily forgive.
After they get out what they've been bottling up for all this time...
The two understand that arguing over who is right and who is wrong is no good. The duo knows that their counterpart strives to be the perfect partner, assuring they're almost always on the winning team. They deftly forgive the other because they know the other isn't perfect. Who is? What's done cannot be undone, and they must move past it to make for a better tomorrow.
4. In the hustle and bustle of their busy schedules, somehow they still manage to stay down to earth.
In a world where everyone calls him Frank, she calls him Francis. They still own their first house together, and visit it often when they need a minute to breathe. He fondly recalls the lilies she planted in the front yard; the only time she'd ever gardened. Sometimes, he plays violent video games to kill the urge. They sit in the windowsill every night, smoking cigarettes, their own little thing, and talk about their days, their dreams and their latest evil schemes. Could anything be better?
