5 Reasons Every College Student Should Exercise

Sounds crazy, right?

As the temperature drops, so does my motivation to leave my bed. There is no hour long lecture that can make me leave my bed to walk 15 minutes while it is freezing outside. So I stay in bed. I stay in bed and I eat and then I eat again and probably a couple more times after that. Before I know it my "just skipping one class" turns into a day-long break in which I eat my weight in food.

Unfortunately, this day is usually followed by a series of me making very unhealthy choices. Whether that be drinking a million cups of coffee or having a day of Netflix marathons. So here are a few reasons that you probably shouldn't follow my example.

1. It's a great way to de-stress

Classes are stressful and when you add extracurriculars, a job, and a social life on top of them, it is so easy to get bogged down. We are constantly overwhelmed with stress, so it only seems right that we take a least a little bit of time for ourselves. Exercise is scientifically proven to make you happier and, although I'm no scientist, I doubt there is any supporting that doing homework has the same effect.

2. Fitness classes can be fun

Take an hour out of your busy day and grab some friends! Trust me when I say that you do not have to have one fiber of talent or any experience to go to fitness class. Whether it be Zumba, Yoga, Kick-boxing, or just an ab-workout, workout classes can actually be a ton of fun. Somehow you manage to spend time with your friends and be healthy, totally unheard of!!!!

3. It's another way to successfully procrastinate

I pride myself on my ability to procrastinate and still get everything done. Working out is one of my favorite ways to procrastinate because you can't feel bad for being healthy. There are a million ways to procrastinate and I would say this is the most guilt-free and beneficial way. Plus, when you finish your homework, you can treat yourself to some ice cream because you earned it.

4. You have to offset your weekend... habits

Whether your weekend consisted of fast food, ice cream, or alcohol, you have to get rid of all of that junk in your system. Not to mention, it makes you feel a little bit better that you can at least pull yourself together enough to workout regardless of how rough your night was. Great work.

5. Your fast metabolism is not going to last forever

As crazy as it is to think about, we are not going to be young forever. Eventually, all of that Natty Lite and Ramen will catch up to you and you'll wonder why you did this to yourself knowing the consequences. Obviously you won't keep this figure forever, but try to jump start the weight gain. I can't imagine Stacy's Mom didn't work out in college.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
