At this point, you've probably heard one thing or another about an exponentially expanding group on University of Michigan's campus: MUSIC Matters. For good reason, too. The student-run, non-profit organization is changing the way many students are able to make a positive social change in various aspects of our community. The group puts on large-scale events, from fundraisers with giveaways at popular restaurants to concerts featuring famous artists at local venues. All of these seed-fund for important charities in the area.

If the basics aren't enough to convince you to look into joining, MUSIC matters is excited to announce their partnership with another organization on campus, called "Books for a Benefit." Here are some of the biggest reasons to check it out if you haven't had the chance:

1. "Books for a Benefit" has a large influence in the community

"Books for a Benefit" is another powerful student-run organization, and this partnership will be the first one since its founding 7 years ago. Their mission is to foster an appreciation and understanding of the benefits that come with literacy. One of the main goals is to change the community by increasing the availability of books and academic resources to schools in ways that will stimulate and increase young children's drive to learn.

2. MUSIC Matters and "Books for a Benefit" build off of each other's causes

Both MUSIC Matters and "Books for a Benefit" aim to unite, empower, and cause advancement in Michigan youth toward a better education. The best part? The main foundation of both orgs are students between the ages of 18 and 21, which makes these groups stand apart from others in the community.

Fun fact: The "MUSIC" in MUSIC Matters' name stands for "Michigan Undergrads Serving in the Community." The more you know, eh?

3. MUSIC Matters is supporting BFB in many aspects

For creating a partnership, MM is giving "Books for a Benefit" quite a few resources. These include a $2,500 grant, volunteers for many of their service projects this semester, marketing and social media perks, and a feature at SpringFest. P.S- if you haven't checked out SpringFest, make sure to do so! Get your tickets early, because the they're predicted to sell out even faster than last year.

4. Volunteer work is so beneficial to not only the community, but the individual serving as well

I've said it once and I'll say it again: One of the best life decisions I've made is making volunteering a consistent part of my agenda. Both MM and BFB hold service and philanthropic activities close to heart, so this partnership will allow the amount of service activities to multiply.

#5. MUSIC Matters is expanding

MM is in the process of finding ways to reach beyond the Michigan campus, and impact the greater Michigan community.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
