In this day and age, we are able to constantly communicate via the internet. However, without using google translate, many people wouldn't be able to communicate with people in other countries. Personally, I believe everyone should become bilingual and here's why:
1. Job market
Employment is hard enough to come by. Sometimes having a degree in your field just isn't enough. Being bilingual allows you to communicate to a larger community of people, which would strongly benefit your employer. Thus, being bilingual will increase your chances of getting hired.
2. Globalization
While learning another language, you are able to learn a lot about their culture. You are able to learn about major holidays that only occur in that region or even about historical events that occurred where the language originates. Being bilingual makes you much more informed about the world.
3. Travel
Knowing multiple languages increases the number of places you can successfully travel to. The more languages you know, the more places you will be able to communicate. Therefore, when traveling, you won't have to stick to the 'tourist' parts of every county.
4. Memory
Learning another language also helps improve your memory and other brain functions. When you age, your memory will be sharper because you use many parts of your brain while learning languages.
5. Education
Language acquisition helps in understanding new words in your own language, making it easier to make inferences in a learning setting.
Needless to say, there are many benefits to learning another language. You should give it a try!
