Well ya'll, it's that time of the year again. The time where every girl under the age of 30 posts photos of themselves on their Instagram accounts with the identical caption of "New year. New me". I won't lie, I am guilty of one of these beautifully stereotypical posts, but let's not be afraid of calling it what it is. Cliche. Almost as bad as the ever holy New Years Resolution. If you're like me, than you know whatever you say is a huge lie.
The gym membership you said you're going to get probably won't make it past mid-February, and don't worry no one is going to judge you for it, we've all been there! Truth be told there's nothing stopping you from making a June Resolution, or an October Resolution, it just feels nicer to do it for the new year because of that whole "new year new me" thing. Instead of making an entire list of things you probably won't do, like going to the gym every day or being nicer to Susan from HR, here are somethings that you can do that are far more realistic.
1. Go for a walk once in a while
Instead of getting whatever great deal you think you're getting on that gym membership that probably won't last, go for a walk. It doesn't have to be a long one, it doesn't even have to be every day. One 20-30 minute walk a few times a week can help slowly build stamina and cardio. This is especially helpful if you're anything like me and don't like to sweat that much. Start small. That gym will still be there in June.
2. Put yourself first.
I've noticed that when people hear the term "putting yourself first" they think it sounds kind of selfish. Let me tell you that it is not selfish, and when you do it it feels AMAZING. Putting yourself first can be as simple as having a day where you just stay in bed all day and binge watch your favorite show, to hiking to the top of the nearest mountain/tall hill and meditating for five hours. Do things that make YOU happy. Cut toxic people out of your life and stand up for yourself.
3. Quality over quantity
Okay I know this one sounds weird but bear with me. This resolution might be a little more age specific. As in between the ages of 21 and 25. What comes to my mind when I mean quality over quantity is that spending a little more money on something nicer than a knock-off is okay in moderation. Take make-up for example. Cheap foundation can look cheap and not feel great on your skin and potentially break out your face. If you get a higher end foundation, you're more likely to get something better quality with better benefits that'll make your skin feel great. For all you non-make-up wearers, I'll put it like this, cheap vodka in a plastic bottle = worse hangover than nicer vodka in a glass bottle. In other words, treat yourself!
4. Be nice(ish)
If you're one of those sh!
5. Make good choices
You should always make good choices anyway, but I feel like people don't think of this as a resolution. When I say make good choices, I don't mean like serious life choices, I mean like using your blinker when you're driving or learning how to merge onto a highway correctly. I'm not saying I'm the world's best driver, but the amount of wrecks I almost get in
As 2017 comes to an end (thank god) we can all rest easy knowing that we have hundreds of lists that we can turn to for resolution inspiration because where would we be without all of those lies we tell ourselves and everyone else about how "this year is my year". Make this year different. Invite Susan from HR over, pop open a bottle of your favorite rosé, watch whatever singer pulled the short straw for the NYE performance this year make a fool of themselves as per usual, and have a Happy New Year.
