5 People Who Might Save The World

You'll never guess number 5...

1. Athlete Mangar Makur Chuot

Mangar Makur Chuot carries on his father's dedication to South Sudan while still honoring ties to Australia, the country where he discovered sprinting. After eight years in a Kenyan refugee camp, the orphan worked hard to become great. His positive immigration story inspires us at a time when "immigration" is a controversial buzzword. I am glad that Chuot runs, exemplifying loyalty to two nationalities, breathing life into the memory of those lost in the civil war's violence, and even passing his passion and his wisdom down to indigenous children. Check out this article.

2. Police Chief Chris Magnus

In 2006, this chief stepped up, seeing that his new department (and the surrounding community) could use real change. He has created programs for training and processes for reviewing, in order to make sure that his officers can be held accountable. These officers have formed relationships with diverse Richmond residents. In this historically violent city, "no one has been killed by a cop since 2007" (link) and that's partially because local families trust the police.

3. Dr. Pierrette Mimi Poinsett

Advocating for lesser-heard voices requires awareness and devotion. As a pediatrician and as a mother of a son with learning disorders, this woman advocates well. She writes to increase awareness and cares about tearing down untruths. Read one of her pieces about autism and race here.

4. SEPTA Driver Charles Arterbury "Above and beyond the call of duty"

Charles Arterbury, pictured on the right, stands proudly with the Captain of the SEPTA police. He went "above and beyond the call of duty" one late night to protect a passenger's property from a robber. Watch him be a real life superhero here.

5. You

All of these people could walk down the street without your recognition. But they are inspirations and heroes anyway. You have the ability to stand for something greater, to demand better from the system, to advocate for the helpless, and/or to protect someone. I believe in you! This is an infinite list that expands for anyone who wants to join it. Let's save the world from fear and hatred together.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
