Fair warning, this is gonna be one of those articles I just spew out the very last second right before the deadline, but it's still gonna be quality, I promise you that. Anyways, back to the task at hand. It's no secret that I graduate UCF in May (scary and definitely not ready), and I was trying to figure out my article idea for this week, and there seemed to be no article on all the options someone has related to post-graduation. Well, here I go again to save the day. In true Odyssey fashion, here are the six options you have after you graduate college!
1. Enter the workforce.
I have to mention, of course, the most common option for students after one graduates with a bachelor's degree is to start your career off. Sure, the salary may not be great, it's not quite the job you were looking for, but it's just the start of your career. If it is the dream job you have been looking for this entire time, congratulations, I hope you enjoy it and you are deeply passionate about it because you will be doing this for a good while. For the rest of us that are not ready to enter the workforce, more options are on the table.
2. Apply to graduate school.
The second-most common option on this list is obviously graduate school (my applications have just been approved, send me your prayers, my grades are horrible). This option is for those who have a very specialized degree and need to enter the next stage (shoutout to medical and law students out there), or, it even could be just so you can get that pay grade a little bump to where you want it, grad school could be your answer.
If you're not ready to fully commit to a Master's or Ph.D., a graduate certificate could be your answer. A graduate certificate is for those who already have a college degree who are looking to specialize in a certain skill that doesn't require a graduate level degree. If your graduate school is like UCF, a lot of the graduate certificates is already a hefty percentage of a way into a Master's degree, so a grad cert could be a great start for you if you're looking at graduate school! Just don't forget about student loans and stuff, because that's kind of important.
3. Travel.
Whether it could be backpacking your way across Europe, taking a cruise to the Caribbean, or even picking some exotic countries in Asia, traveling can be a great way to get away from everyday life after graduation – just make sure you have the money to do this before considering this option!
4. Take a gap year.
The gap year is rare but still is utilized by some people who can afford to do so. This is pretty much taking a year off to reset, relax, and think about what to do next. Do be careful taking this route though, being a hermit for the rest of your life is not necessarily the best way to go about things.
5. Start your own business.
Start up your own company, be your own boss, and get to work in a field you are passionate about! This route is very difficult, but if you pull it off, more the power to you. You can do anything you are willing to put your mind to, so don't let anyone tell you differently.
6. Join the military.
For those that were in ROTC in college, you're one step ahead of the curve as you can enter in as an officer right after you graduate. For the rest of us who didn't, enlisting in one of the branches is always an option. Either way, it's a really good thing to represent your country in the United States Armed Force.
