5 Things New York City Tourists Need To Work On When Visiting

New York City is a beautiful place, I know. It has a rich history and is a travel destination for many people, I understand. If some of us didn't live there, we would probably want to visit.

That's the thing though. We live here. We have a certain way of doing things in life such as walking fast and ignoring anyone that tries to talk to us while doing so because the immediate thought is that there trying to sell us their mixtape or something else we don't need.

Most of the time we know where we’re going and sometimes we don't and may have to ask someone. Tourists are different and seem to not understand how things here are very different than where they are from. Here are five things tourists will need to work on while visiting New York City.

1. Taking Pictures

We understand the beauty of New York City and its buildings some of which are centuries old. The thing is that you should play yourself in an area that doesn't interrupt pedestrians in front of and behind you. Simply stopping in the middle of where you are walking will not work and makes people want to knock you upside your head.

2. Asking Questions

It’s not you asking questions that is annoying, its how you ask them. Any type of physical touch isn't okay. Everyone knows about crime in New York City, so touching someone will not do. Just look and say “excuse me.” Then ask how to get where you have to go. New Yorkers are considerate when it comes to directions because the subway map can be confusing to someone who hasn't read it.

3. Calling Us Rude

We aren't as rude as you think. But at 7:00 in the morning on the way to work or school or at 5:00 p.m. on the way home you're exhausted from the land day and would rather no one ask you or touch you or attempt to squeeze into an obviously crowded train when there is visibly no room. Also that fact that the MTA (the primary form of transportation for millions of people) always has something wrong with it will not make anyone happy. Prime hours are from 12 to 3pm if you don't want to be the target of a whole day’s built up anger.

4. Taking Up the Sidewalk Space

Theres a chance you may not know where you're going and then you stop in the middle of the sidewalk but heres the thing: PEOPLE ARE WALKING BEHIND YOU. You cant just stop to look at a building because you think thats where you have to go. slowly drift to curb if your curious. Another thing is if you are in a group.

New York City sidewalks are barely big enough for couples to walk on in both directions because of the combination of outside restaurant seating and street vendors. So why you think it would be okay to walk side by side when there are three, four or maybe even five blows my mind.

5. Walking Speed

No matter your tax bracket, if you live in New York City, you live a fast paced lifestyle. Everything is routine. Part of that is walking as fast as you can to get where you have to go. What irritates a New Yorker the most is when they are walking and someone is walking in front of them what seems like as slowly as possible. It doesn't matter the weather, there are places to be.

Whether you're in Times Square, Soho, Williamsburg or Pelham Bay, Park Slope or Astoria, New York City residents hope that you take all of these into consideration. It makes many days easier and you'll see that New Yorkers aren't as rude as you think. Although this is targeted at tourists, people who are from less busy areas of the city should take these into consideration as well.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
