Somehow (although I'm not sure how) there are people in this world who hate musicals with a burning passion. As someone who has had a passion for music and theatre for as long as she remembers, it's foreign to me how people dislike musical theatre! Here's a list of five musicals that are good for those who are hesitant to watch musicals.
1. Grease
Personally, I'm not a huge Grease fan, but it's a classic musical that many generations can enjoy. This TV musical is also written for the stage, so you could watch it on TV or on the stage. If you're a fan of the 50s, milkshakes, drama, and high school, Grease is the one that you want.
2. Wicked
This musical is about the witches of Oz, the land where the movie, The Wizard of Oz occurs. This show is family friendly, wonderfully scored and easy to enjoy for those new to musical theatre.
3. Newsies
Newsies is a Disney Broadway show that covers a historical newsboy strike in New York City. The show features dozens of talented singers, dancers, and actors that don New York Accents. This is a great show and it's always entertaining.
4. The Lion King
When people talk about the first show they have ever seen on Broadway, they oftentimes are talking about The Lion King. This show is also a Disney production, so the costumes and choreography are top-notch. The Lion King is definitely a must see for new musical theatre-goers.
5. Hairspray
This show tackles the issues of racism in the 1960's in Baltimore, MD. Hairspray features a wide variety of characters, music, and content. This is definitely a show that I recommend, as it continues to be relevant in today's society.
People who claim to hate musical theatre just haven't been exposed enough! Give the shows a shot, you never know – maybe you'll become a theatre junkie.
