Halloween is the second-best time of year. October means candy corn, pumpkin decorations and creating the best costume that you can think of. However, there's another part of Halloween that I love so much, and that's the movies and the different Halloween specials that appear on television and in theaters. However, with so many horror movies and specials on TV, it may be hard to decide what to watch.
I've been through many Halloween's and, as a movie junkie, I want to make the movie selection process for you and your friends a lot easier. This is a list of my five favorite movies to watch on Halloween, and whether you like classics, pure-horror, funny horror, or plain comedies, there should be something on this list for you.
1. "The Babadook"
If there's one thing children love, it's a bedtime story. What happens if a children's story causes more nightmares than sweet dreams? In the indie horror film "The Babadook," an innocent children's book causes nightmares for a widowed mom and her son. This movie relies on subtle horror as opposed to lazy jump scares, which makes the movie a lot scarier than many popular horror movies. The child in the movie is an obvious burden on his mother, and he manages to be eerie and creepy without being an outright demon child. The protagonist is relatable, and we are not only scared for her, but we also sympathize with her and her troubles. If you like pure horror and want to be terrified this Halloween, I would recommend this movie for you.
2. "Grave Encounters"
On the subject of indie horror, this 2010 film manages to be legitimately scary and oddly funny at the same time. "Grave Encounters" is about a small group of crew members that stay overnight in a haunted asylum to record ghost and demons for their television show. None of the main characters actually believe in ghosts or demons, and admitted to fabricating evidence for fame and fortune, and are shocked when they discover that this asylum is actually haunted. It was pretty hard to feel bad for any of the characters, however, because they weren't relatable and were quite rude. This movie is far more blatant in their horror than most found footage films, using jump scares and shock value to scare the audience. Because of this, it isn't as scary as other movies, but it is also fairly humorous and has the right mix of comedy and horror.
3. "Troll 2"
Not all indie horror films are good, or even scary. However, the entertainment value in "Trolls 2" is just how over-the-top and bad it is. About scary goblins that turn humans into green goo, this movie has terrible special effects and awful writing and acting. These terrible things, however, are what makes this movie fun to watch. There will never be a time when the infamous "OH MY GOD" line fails to make a group of friends laugh. If you want to laugh this Halloween at a movie that's "so bad, it's good," I'd definitely recommend "Troll 2."
4. "The Shining"
"The Shining" is a classic. Based off Stephen King's novel of the same name, this movie is about a family that has to take care of a hotel during the winter. The dad starts going insane due to the effects of being snowed in, and his young son, Danny, suffers from growing psychic powers. This movie uses psychological tactics and subtle horror to scare the audience, and slowly builds up to the final act. The dad doesn't start off as a maniac bent on killing his family, he slowly grows to that point in increasingly terrifying ways.
5. "The Nightmare Before Christmas"
It's impossible to bring up Halloween movies without mentioning this Tim Burton classic about a creature who wants to try something new. While not a horror film, this movie resonates with many Americans and is a staple on Halloween. The stop-motion animation is iconic and paved the way for many other Tim Burton films, and each character is unique and engaging. However, the most iconic part of this movie is it's soundtrack. The songs are played throughout the month of October, and have been covered by popular rock artists like Panic! At the Disco, Rise Against and Marilyn Manson. It's impossible to discuss Halloween without discussing this film!
Halloween is one of the most amazing times of year, and the staple of a Halloween party are the movies that you marathon during it. Hopefully these recommendations will help you and your friend decide on a movie, whether it scares you, shocks you, or just makes you laugh. So log into Netflix, check Redbox, and watch an amazing movie this Halloween!
