Summer is the best time to catch up on all the films you may have missed while you were busy at school, but don’t forget to make time for some old favorites.
1. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
This is a classic for most of us, and if you’ve never seen it I would highly recommend. Though it was targeted toward children, there are a lot of lessons we adults can take from it as well. For me, it was almost like seeing it with fresh eyes after the year of intense theological learning I’ve done, and this time through I feel like I really understood what C. S. Lewis was trying to say. Bonus if you also reread the books.
2. The Princess Diaries 1 and 2
Classic Anne Hathaway will take you back to the days of slumber parties and “My mom won’t let me watch PG rated movies, we have to watch something else.” Though this time around it was much more obvious to me that the “15-year-olds” in the movie were really all probably in their late teens to early twenties, it is a blast from the past that renews your faith in girl power and makes you want to call your grandmother.
3. Star Wars
With all these newfangled Star Wars movies coming out, one can forget the true charm of the early special effects. Sometimes it's nice to get rid of all the shiny bells and whistles and go back to the days of Jar Jar Binks, no matter how much you cringe.
4. High School Musical
Even though Zac Efron let everyone down when the 10th anniversary rolled around, there is never not a reason to watch High School Musical again. Get a bunch of your friends together and break out the choreography you had no idea you still remembered. We’re all in this together!
5. Camp Rock
While you’re in sing-along mode, why not revisit Demi Lovato in the days when “Who’s your favorite Jonas?” was still a legitimate indicator of someone’s personality? Though the brightly colored leggings under jean skirts may be a thing of the past, this movie reminds us to always be who we truly are inside. Now, if we could only figure out who that is?
