Who would've thought that a bunch of singing and dancing vegetables would have ever caught the attention of kids?
Well, I know that in my household and several of my other friend's houses this show was a hit. If you aren't familiar with VeggieTales it is a Christian based cartoon that told stories through silly songs based off of Bible stories or made up stories that correlated with messages from the Bible.
I have learned several lessons from this television show, but a few of them still stick with me in my everyday life.
1. Be thankful.
In one of my favorite episodes, we are introduced to a character named Madame Blueberry. She is a blueberry that is distraught because she has a lot of stuff and is always wanting more stuff. She feels a void in her heart because she can't be happy with all this stuff.
She has to learn to be thankful for the things she already has and the friends she has. I use this lesson in my everyday life when I begin to feel envious of someone else. I start to think of all the things that I already have and thank the Lord for it.
2. Put others before yourself.
King George is a character that is selfish and wants all the rubber ducks to himself. He sees that a small boy named Thomas has a rubber duck that he wants. So he puts Thomas on the front line of battle so he could, in turn, steal the duck.
King George is told by another Shepard that he is being selfish and only thinking of himself. He never at one point thought about how Thomas felt in this whole predicament. This has taught me to always try to think of others and how they may feel instead of always thinking about myself.
3. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all.
This lesson is personally a hard one for me since I have caught myself several times gossiping a few times. The particular episode this lesson comes from is the Rumor Weed one. Based off The Little Shop of Horrors weed, the Rumor Weed sprouts out other little talking weeds that go around and tell rumors about people.
The hero of the story Larry-Boy tries to chop them down, but it won't work. Finally, once they learn that they have to start spreading positive words instead of rumors the weeds turn into beautiful flowers. I try to remember that awful weed whenever I am about to gossip about someone and think about how I would feel if people were going around spreading rumors about me.
4. Don't judge a book by its cover.
One of the vegetables is having a party but refuses to invite a new kid because they are different. Later in the episode two characters that are different end up saving the day. This shows the first vegetable that maybe he should invite this new kid and actually get to know them before he based them off their looks.
There have been a few instances where I have caught myself judging someone simply based off the clothes they were wearing. I have learned that everyone looks different and that we shouldn't judge someone based off of their outer appearance, but instead find out what type of person they are.
5. Stand up for what you believe in.
In the last episode I am going to talk about there was a chocolate factory and they made a lot of chocolate bunnies. The boss was going to make everyone bow down to a giant chocolate bunny or else they would be punished.
A few of the characters refused to because they didn't believe in worshiping false idols. So the boss threw them in a furnace. They came out of the furnace perfectly fine and they knew that God would save them. In tough situations, we may want to back down about the stuff we believe in because it is the easier way out.
I have learned that you should never have to back down because of what other people may think of you. You should always be brave and stand up for the things you believe in.
Whether you are familiar with this children's cartoon or not I hope that I have opened your eyes to some important life lessons that I have learned through singing vegetables.
