"One Tree Hill" is one of those TV shows that I think a lot of people deny they like because they don't want to be a typical teenager or don't want to be stereotyped into some ridiculous category. Personally, I think "One Tree Hill" is a great show, or at least it was until half of the original cast quit. I also think that it had some important messages throughout its numerous seasons. Here is a list of what you can take away from watching "One Tree Hill."
1. Don't take your friends for granted
Friendship was probably the most important aspect of "One Tree Hill." Not only did the story follow a group of friends, but it followed how the characters were better able to cope with their problems because of those friends. Oftentimes, I feel that many people mistreat their friends because they assume they will always be there. Speaking from a perspective where I don't have many friends, it's important for you to know that you can't take the friends you have for granted, no matter how many there are.
Don't think because you have 20 that you get to completely ignore six of them. Through your life, you may at one point need advice from someone who isn't apart of your family, and in that moment, you are going to need someone who you trust 100 percent and who likes you enough to listen. Keep your friends close to you, you need them.
2. Follow your dreams, no matter how hard it will make your life
Throughout the show, almost every single character seemed to have what many would call an "unrealistic" dream. Brooke wanted to be a major fashion designer. Peyton wanted to start a record label and produce music. Lucas wanted to write a book.
All of these things are amazing accomplishments, but for some reason, people often shy away from doing these things because it will be "too hard." "One Tree Hill" taught me that whatever you want in life, you need to go after it no matter what. Your dreams won't follow you—you have to chase them. Life is never going to hand you anything, and if you hesitate, you may not get what you want.
3. Don't hide your emotions
There were some pretty tough times for all characters on the show. Peyton was stalked and attacked by a guy pretending to be her brother. Brooke's store got robbed and she was assaulted. Nathan got shoved through a window and ended up in a wheelchair—something he thought would end his dreams of playing basketball forever. All of these characters at some point decided to hide what they were feeling and bottled it all up instead of talking.
Unfortunately, this only means that those emotions are going to explode out of that bottle when it gets too full. Something I learned from "One Tree Hill" is that hiding what you are feeling is never going to make what you're hiding easier. You'll start overthinking everything, and in the end, only make matters worse for yourself. If something happens and you don't know how to deal with it, share those concerns with someone else. If you truly don't have someone in your life to talk to, write it down. No matter what, get it out.
4. Be silly
We all have our moments when we get excited about something but don't want others to know how excited we are. We hold it down and pretend not to care. The characters on "One Tree Hill" all had their moments, but instead of caring what other people thought, they did whatever they wanted with pride because that's how you have fun. Don't think that you aren't allowed to act younger than you are, and don't let what other people might think of what you're doing stop you from being yourself.
5. Work hard and stay strong; you'll get there
Almost every single character on the show has faltered in one way or another. They've been fired from jobs, been let down by family, done something morally wrong, failed at school, been made fun of, have gotten attacked. No matter what, they always, eventually, got back up and kept moving forward.
