5 Important Lessons I've Learned That Have Changed My Life For The Better
Abbey Miller

1. Embrace change

Change can be hard for anyone, but instead of fearing it you should embrace it. Change is usually for the better. It's hard to think about what life will be like after the changes occur, but it will all be okay eventually. If you embrace it rather than avoid it, you will grow into the person you're supposed to be and better yourself along the way, no matter how hard it may be.

2. Depend on yourself for happiness

NEVER depend on someone else to determine your happiness. In order to truly be happy and accept yourself, you need to find happiness within yourself. It is okay to allow other people to make you feel happy as well, but don't be completely dependent on them because if they leave one day, it will destroy you. It isn't healthy to depend on others completely, you need that source of independence. You need to be able to possess self love and self happiness, and the only way to do so is to not depend on others. You are in control of your life, so take control of your own happiness. ALWAYS be dependent on yourself and not others to see the light and happiness in life.

3. People are temporary, most of the time

People will change and things will change, no matter how much you want to deny it. You will go separate ways with people you never thought you would, and that's okay. You can never truly know if someone is temporary or not. A lot of the time, people will come and go. They will be temporary. Instead of being mad, embrace it. You can learn new things about what to avoid and what to look for when developing new relationships in your life because of the temporary people from your past. Be sure to make the most of the time you have with someone because they're in your life for a reason, even if it's only for a limited amount of time.

4. 20 seconds of courage is all you need

I remember sitting in my counselor's office one day and she told me that sometimes you just need 20 seconds of courage in a situation that you are nervous about. Whether that be getting up on a stage to perform or talk to people you've never met before. That little ounce of courage can go a long way and get you places you could only dream of. 20 seconds of courage can change your life.

5. Everything happens for a reason

This is the biggest lesson I've learned and the thought that runs through my mind in every downfall I have in life. Life isn't perfect and sometimes things will happen that are horrible, but if you remember that everything happens for a reason, it'll give you a sense of hope. Hope that you need in order to move past a difficult situation and hope that life will get better. It will get better, because everything happens for a reason.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
