5 Things In Fort Myers, FL You Might Have Forgotten To Do

Yesterday on campus, I was walking to the library from the parking lot and overheard two freshmen complaining about how Florida Gulf Coast University lacked the “university experience” because it wasn’t your typical party state school. “If you want to party, like, really party, you need to transfer up to FSU.”

Sure, we have all heard each other’s stories about that “one night in Tallahassee” but in my opinion, if you’re deciding between changing schools based on the nightlife, you need to “sort out your priorities” (and I quote, Ron Weasley).

I am sure some of you are rolling your eyes at my whole “you don’t need drinking to have fun" motto so first, let me add a disclaimer: I love Rusty’s Mug night as much as the next girl, but part of the reason why I chose FGCU is because you don’t need to party your ass off every night to have fun here. I may be a little bias coming from freeze your face off Michigan, but FGCU is 20 minutes from the beach! So instead of complaining and plotting out your second-semester transfer, take some time to uncover Fort Myers’ hidden gems:

1. Spend some time with nature

Some people may think there isn’t anywhere to go hiking or hit the trails in Florida, but one of my favorite parts of moving to Florida is the beauty of our ecosystems! My favorites include 6 Mile Slough and Lakes Regional Park. Koreshan Park is a hidden gem that was actually founded by a group of FL pioneers to build their new faith “Koreshanity.” It is a pretty unique spot, filled with dozens of old houses, beautiful running trails, and kayaking through the Estero River. You can even attend events like a “ghost walk,” music in the park” and Sunday’s farmers market.

2. Make your way downtown

Spend the day exploring historic Fort Myers. Take a walk through the city and discover some cute shops and local cafes. Downtown Fort Myers is known for the music and art walk, featuring local artist perform on the streets. There have been fire throwers, local bands and beautiful art present for all to enjoy. My favorite café — Green Cup has a great selection of vegetarian and vegan-friendly food and of course, bubble tea! There Joe’s Record Exchange has a great selection of records to explore and purchase too. There are so many cute hole-in-walls it is hard to know where to look.

3. Don't be a beach, go to one

Lovers Key is by far my favorite beach in Fort Myers. If you are looking for a low-key beach day – this is the place to be. Parking is almost always available, and admission is cheap too. There are kayaks, paddle boards, and bikes for rental. In the colder season, you may even spot a manatee or two. The trolley that drives to the beach works like a charm when you are dehydrated from the sunshine after a long, perfect beach day. Just make sure to get on the last ride before 5!

4. Don't panic — it's organic

There are so many farmers markets in Fort Myers it’s hard to find one that doesn’t accommodate your schedule. My favorite? Definitely Coconut Point's farmer's markets on Thursday 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.! They have a wide selection of local veggies, fruits, and art. Make sure to get some Homemade Watermelon Green Tea. Super yummy, and free $3 refills..what more could you ask for?

5. Long walks & sunsets

How blessed are we that we get to live 20 minutes from beautiful beach sunsets? My favorite sunset beach is definitely Barefoot or Bonita. Packing a picnic or picking up some $5 Wednesday sushi fixes from Publix makes the perfect companion a beautiful sunset. If you are in desperate need of some quality alone time and need to sit and reflect, a beautiful Florida sunset is the perfect solution to any problem.

So sure, Fort Myers may not be the same atmosphere of a typical party school or a big city dream, but for myself, personally, I can’t think of a better place to spend in this crazy time of my 20s. As fun as it is to have a wild night out, that isn't what your friendships and college life should only entail. Make memories that don't involve forgetting them the next day and you won't regret it. I love having an endless summer all year round and a place to never get bored if you know how to get creative where you live.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
