The massively popular Game of Thrones
is reaching a close, with it's second-to-last season having recently wrapped up. With each season, Game of Thrones has gone further and further away from its original source material, George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire book series. Some characters have died too soon and others never existed at all. Here are five characters that only exist in the books. Spoilers for both the show and the books below.1. Aegon Targaryen (Young Griff)
In the season 7 finale it was revealed that Jon Snow’s real name is Aegon Targaryen. This is odd, considering Rhaegar already had a son named Aegon. While Aegon is a posthumous character in the show, killed as an infant long before the show started, this is not the case in the books. Everyone believes him to have been killed, but there is a blue-haired boy that secretly claims to be Aegon. This boy goes by the name of Young Griff and is planning to marry his aunt, Daenerys. It is doubtful he will appear in the show as his plotline seems to have been partially taken over by Jon.
2. Jeyne Poole
Jeyne Poole is Sansa’s friend in the beginning. After most Starks are assumed dead and/or missing, Ramsay Snow takes over Winterfell. To secure his hold on the Starks’ home, Jeyne is forced to pose as Arya Stark, as most people who would recognize her are dead. “Arya” is married to Ramsay and treated horribly until escaping with Theon. This storyline is given to Sansa in the show.
3. Edric Storm
Edric is one of Robert Baratheon’s many bastards. He was raised at Storm’s End, fostered by his uncle Renly. During the siege of Storm’s End, his other uncle, Stannis, sends him to Dragonstone with Melisandre, the Red Priestess. He is leeched and she uses his royal blood in a ritual to curse the other kings. Davos helps him escape, afraid the priestess will sacrifice him. This plotline is given to his half-brother Gendry in the show.
4. & 5. Arianne and Quentyn Martell
Arianne is the princess of Dorne. She, along with her cousins, the Sand Snakes, plot to put Myrcella on the Iron Throne, married to her little brother Trystane Martell. The Dornish have their eldest inherit, no matter the gender. Due to this, they believe that Myrcella has a better claim to the throne than her brothers. Quentyn, Arianne’s brother, is out searching for Daenerys Targaryen with plans to marry her. Neither of the older Martell siblings exist in the show and the Dornish plotline takes a very different turn.
