5 Things All Freshmen Learn Their First Month Of College

It's ok to stress out sometimes. It's also ok to stress-cry to your mom on the phone.

I've spent two weeks at college so far and I already feel behind. I have tons of tests already but all I want to do is watch Big Mouth on Netflix. But I've gathered a few tips from upperclassman and simply just trial and error for making life easier here.

1. Don’t procrastinate

Okay. I cannot emphasize this enough. This isn’t like high school anymore where you have class after class. You are most probably going to have an hour or two in between your classes. I know it may not seem like much to finish homework but at the end of the day those hours add up. Especially when all you want to do is go to a frat party. I lied. I meant rewatch Gossip Girl episodes on Netflix.

2. Cry/call your mom

Everyone does it. College is a new experience and it’s scary as hell when you realize no one is going to make you soup when you’re sick from a cold.

3. Don’t lose your room card

Just don’t. It’s embarrassing as hell to know that you were that freshman.

4. You have to put in effort to make friends now

I know you met your high school BFF because you guys basically grew up together in your small town. But you are lucky if you are sitting next to the same person the next day in your 300 person lecture. At college, you have to put effort into asking people to dinner and making sure you keep up with that commitment.

5. Stress out every now and then

It is ok to feel sad and stressed. Sometimes we just need to go through those emotions before we can get back up. College is new and different and there is no structure for us to follow. So it's fine if you're just trying to figure it out right now. Realize that everyone around you is probably going through it too (the quarter system is killing all of us). But at one point remember stress isn't always productive. Feel sad for a while. Then get back up and remember what you want to accomplish.

College is an entirely different experience, from classes to roommates. Sometimes just changing the little things makes it so much easier.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
