Whether it be tradition or the sheer size of the animal agriculture industry, sometimes foods can have animal byproducts hidden in their ingredients. Although this can be frustrating and upsetting at times, it also keeps vegans and vegetarian's attentive of the food that they're putting into their bodies.
To clarify, anything that originates from an animal including dairy, eggs, and honey is not vegan.
Although long-time vegans won't be surprised when something isn't 100 percent vegan because many things are not, some people newer to the idea of veganism may be surprised at some of the foods that have animal ingredients.
When I'm hanging out with friends or family members, the phrase "that's not vegan?" is often blurted out.
Here are five non-vegan foods that may surprise you.
1. Some Cereals
I'm a cereal lover. When I was in high school, my diet consisted of chocolate Special K for breakfast and dinner. Unfortunately, Special K uses honey as a sweetener. And it's not the only brand that processes its cereal with animal products. Your beloved Lucky Charms uses gelatin in order to produce its marshmallows. I also miss Honey Bunches of Oats. But the world will keep turning, and there's always vegan Frosted Flakes as a back-up.
2. Worcestershire Sauce
Apologies to all Bloody Mary lovers, but Worcestershire's taste comes from the use of anchovies. But don't fret, bloodies can easily be made sans-Worcestershire.
3. Processed Goods
Corporations love sneaking milk derivatives into their products. This winter, my mom bought me garlic flavored rice to cook for dinner. Good thing I have a habit of checking labels, or I wouldn't have noticed that milk was one of the first ingredients in the "all-natural garlic rice." Highly processed foods are bad news anyways to be purchasing, and it's not a good sign when something that does not require animal products has it as its main ingredient -- because it saves the manufacturer money.
4. Some Breads
Sadly, English muffins, bagels and plain loaves of bread are not excluded from the list of non-vegan foods. Eggs, milk, and honey can be slipped into the ingredient list. At restaurants, it seems more often than not, the bread isn't vegan. "Our veggie burger is vegan, but our bun is not!" is a phrase I often hear.
5. Miso soup
Whenever I went out to a Hibachi restaurant, I always would choose the soup over salad. It's absolutely delicious and a great starter before a meal. But to my dismay, I discovered the broth is not vegan. It's made with fish.
Although these are just some of the foods out of thousands that are not vegan official, the point of this article is to promote always checking the label. Even if you aren't vegan or vegetarian, it's important to see what you are putting into your body. Companies love to infuse their products with toxic chemicals and added sugars which can be detrimental to health.
