Everyone breathe in. Hold your breath for a couple of seconds. OK, now breathe out. We’re going to talk about the 2016 presidential election.
It’s been a pretty entertaining primary season so far, but social media has risen to a fever pitch and gone to some pretty weird places. Before we all collectively go off the deep end, I’d like to bring up a couple things.
1. Bernie’s not going to win.
Sorry guys. I know you all loved him and his revolution, but it was always an uphill battle, especially after Super Tuesday, which has de facto crowned the nominee since it began. And it wasn’t through voter fraud or political trickery (which isn’t to say either of them ran a clean campaign), it was through numbers and demographics. When Bernie says he’s going to keep the campaign going to the end, “the end” doesn’t mean the presidency.
2. Yes, Hillary is a progressive.
Is she as progressive as Bernie? No. But her platform calls for minimum wage increase, taxes on the wealthy and systemic social justice, to name a few of her positions. This is, even within the Democratic Party, demonstrably progressive. She’s also reliably progressive. Maybe you don’t agree, but the Human Rights Campaign, Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America certainly do.
That’s not to say she’s progressive across the board — especially when it comes to business and the military — but you’d be hard pressed to find many democrats who are, especially ones who have the experience necessary to be president. Speaking of unqualified…
3. Trump has almost no chance of being president.
You know what the US has a lot of? Women and people of color. Guess who hates The Donald in politically unprecedented numbers? And it’s not just those groups; Trump has the most negative ratings out of any candidate, winning or losing, in recent history. Even other republicans don’t like him; both previous republican presidents and the Speaker of the House refuse to endorse him.
Republicans would have a hard time winning even if they had a well-liked candidate; when it comes to electoral votes, they’re fighting a losing battle. Compounded by the sheer dislike of Trump, GOP victory is looking pretty unlikely from here. Which matters, because…
4. There are massive differences between republicans and democrats.
“It’s all the establishment!” you cry. “Republicans and democrats both are puppets in a meaningless political system!” you say.
I’m not going to waste your time pointing out every difference between our two political parties because I’m not your ninth grade civics teacher. But to illustrate just one of the many radical differences between red and blue, here’s a video explaining Bernie and Hillary’s proposed tax code changes. Now here’s a video explaining Trump and Cruz’s. If they both were suckling at the teat of their corporate overlords, you’d think they would have similar ideas on taxes.
5. The world isn’t ending.
With the endless coverage, noisy rhetoric and insanity of this election, it can feel like the end times are upon us. But this stuff happens pretty often in presidential elections. Eight years ago, half the country was praising Obama as if he were the second coming, while the other half was calling him the Antichrist. But the reality is that some good things happened, some bad things happened and the country survived yet another presidency intact.
I don’t mean to downplay the importance of the presidency in the slightest. I still think this is an important election. But I also think we collectively need to take a chill pill and start looking at the facts. We have six months of this thing to go. At this rate, someone’s going to have a stroke.
